It's a train wreck, no doubt, but somehow everyone walks away unscathed and blinking in the sunlight. I had a poetry teacher that said you should never introduce your poems; they should speak for themselves. I think the same idea can be applied to the mix tape.

This one is all over the place, I like it. I need to actually aquire theee mixs somehow...

Really like this one. I have Gravel Pit's "Silver Gorilla", but somehow I forgot about this track...brings me back to 1998 drinking $2 Rolling Rocks at TT's on a Friday night...

Great Echo & The Bunnymen selection, and I'd never heard Bahaus do "Ziggy"... I almost preferred that version to the original - almost.

Even 5th Dimension and Hendrix - great tracks that I probably wouldn't have checkd out on my own.

one of the best things about these is that, at least once per trade, i hear a song i've known for years but somehow never found out the name or who did it... this time (so far) it's the 5th dimension number on lslapiko's record... huzzah!

I once read a review that said Bauhaus did "Ziggy Stardust" the way Bowie himself would've done it, if he'd had the technology.

it's weird how perfect bauhaus' "ziggy" is. which is better, their version of "ziggy", or their version of "third uncle"?

I love both. Bauhaus did awesome covers. I love their "Telegram Sam." And I think "Rose Garden Funeral of Sores" is a cover as well, but I'm not sure who did the original.

i think it's john cale. yeah, their "telegram sam" i heard before the original, and i kind of like it more, which is sort of blasphemy, but not really, because i heard power stations bang a gong before i heard the original and i like the original more in that case.

This is the first mix I listened to. I like this mix even if most of the songs are not what I would normally listen to. Like her last mix this one has lots of different genres but all fit nicely together. The highlights for me were Echo & the Bunnymen which I was familiar with as well as Damn Personals and the Gravel Pit. The latter two bands/songs I had never heard before. The 5th Dimension songs is interesting but for some reason I am always creeped out by them. It's weird but they've always made me think of cults. Maybe it's the happy songs or the trippy vibe. Anyway good mix. Also I loved the name and cover art. Very appropriate.

Lslapiko,

This mix flows extremely well, despite it's diversity. I bow deeply to your sequencing skills, which also managed to take the utter banality of "Crush with Eyeliner" and make it exciting for me.

I hated Echo & the Bunnymen until now. Thank you for rescuing me from that hatred.

5th Dimension were my mother's favorite band. That song is amazing, as was the J.J. Cale version of "After Midnight." The man knows how to create atmosphere like no other.

I liked the L.A. Guns tune. Is that on "Sex Action?"

Now see, I feel like Crush w/Eyeliner is a tribute to Roxy Music, as are many of the songs on Monster. It's a total glam record. I'm so glad I could rescue you from hating Echo! They're one of my favorite bands of all time. The L.A. Guns song is from their first record, which I think is self-title, but does contain the song Sex Action. As far as I know that first record is still only available on vinyl.

Great mix, as usual! Including my favorite 5th Dimension Tune (and favorite Laura Nyro cover), and quite possibly my favorite Throwing Muses b-side.

Somehow I have never quite taken the Echo & the Bunnymen plunge. One of these days, though - cuz I know there's a lot of great stuff in their catalog, and I liked this song a lot.

I agree that Monster is misunderstood (it's generally underrated now, and was overrated for the all wrong reasons at the time of its release).

Saw J.J. Cale at the Paradise (last year?) on M.Henry's recommendation, and it was great finally getting to see him doing his own "After Midnight" (not to mention "Call Me the Breeze" and "Cocaine") - the man's a friggin' legend.

So, that "Third Uncle" is Eno w/ the Winkies, right? (Peel Session from March 5, 1974). Wow, just looked them up, and did u know that the Winkies had actually put out an album on their own?

Looks pretty awesome:

That is Eno with the Winkies, and it's not a Peel Session. The show was Top Gear on BBC Radio, and the date was 2/26/74. I had no idea the Winkies had their own album. Must check it out. Nice cover! Glad you like my mix!

This one's a mixed bag for me, but I do like the range of artists and songs on it.

5th Dimension, as mentioned before, is a great whimsical bit. I'm also a big fan of that Bauhaus cover, and I've always liked that REM song even though the rest of the album was rather so-so. Isn't 'Eyeliner' the one that's supposedly written about Courtney Love? I remember back then there was 5-6 songs purported to have been about her in the span of a year or two. Dunno how many of those were true.

I picked up Echo and the Bunnymen's "Songs to Learn and Sing" for a few dollars at a flea market just b/c I wanted to know what they sounded like (never was into them before). Heard "Never Stop" and thought it sounded familiar. Lo and behold! Maybe I should give you credit for the subtle influence of picking up that cd.. hmmm. It's pretty good, too.

I wanted to like the Mazzy Star tune, b/c her album that has 'Fade Into You' on it was dreamy bliss, but this song grated on me after too many minutes. Ah well. Is this one on her sequel album to FIY? I was thinking of picking it up.. couldn't decide.

So yes, I liked the range on this disc and there are a few that'll make me smile. Thanks!

Thanks for listening! The Mazzy Star song is actually a "b-side." It only showed up on the "Fade Into You" CD single/EP. I like it because it's kind of bluesy and "bake my biscuit" is a metaphor for getting stoned. I recommend picking up Mazzy Star's first record, She Hangs Brightly. It's my favorite of theirs, a little less monotonous than So Tonight That I Might See or Among My Swan; maybe a little closer to what David Roback was doing with Opal. For Echo & the Bunnymen, definitely pick up Crocodiles, their first album. It's really really good.

I listened to this one three times right off the bat (once the MP3's came around to it)

JJ Cale is under recognized and I hadn't heard the orignal version in about 20 years!

STILL in my deck, play it at least once a day.....

I feel like i found a long lost hidden treasure!!!

I played this at my son's birthday BBQ and it went over pretty good with the family set as well. It followed Miles Davis "Bye Bye Blackbird bootleg" and a dan zanes kids CD.
