*A small derailment if I may.
I'd like to see them do one for 82-85, during the Great Boston Crew HC Era.
Lots of great bands/songs during that short era who are gone and deserve more recognition, that were not part of the Modern Method/XClaim/Taang scene.
I know a few of us NB HC afficiandos realize it, but I'd bet lot of the people (even on here) have no idea the impact that was made worldwide by the Boston HC scene. Even today the Boston area is widely considered the HC Mecca of the world.

I agree with Southie. The original Boston HC scene does not get the respect it deserves.
I do love that Mass Ave CD though. At one point my old band considered doing some of those covers (Thrills, Outlets, Atlantics). Maybe if I can get a bunch of gullible suckers to be my band I'll revisit this idea.

OK, I'll bite:
My Eyes are Burning- Maps
Put All That Behind Me Now- Flies
Drinkin' By the Pool- Dogmatics
George "The Animal" Steele- Mighty Ions
Fear That Mindless- CCCP-TV
Lose That Girl- Primevals
Red Red- 21-645
Down to You- Taxi Boys
Trak- Marc Thor
I'm a Wimp- Baby's Arm
That's all I can come up with right now.

Southie-
I have to disagree. I think Boston's HC scene of that time period was kind of blah. DYS had one good record that wasn't that great and certainly doesn't stand up to most DC shit. SSD had one good record that's pretty awesome and some other halfway decent songs. Negative FX/Last Rites is rad. Slapshot, while one of my favorite bands, aren't really a knockout punch (and that's after the time period you're talking about anyway). Impact Unit????? Funny. Boston Not LA is pretty great and is probably the best document from that time period
I really think Boston's scene wasn't as good in retrospect compared to LA and DC. It's comparable to NYC's which aside from Reagan Yeath, Urban Waste and the Abused, nothing else jumps out 'til Agnostic Front.

yeah.. but, in retrospect, some of that stuff was a little overrated... don't get me wrong: still great, but I think the DC and midwest hardcore scenes were just as good... Negative Approach smokes any band that Boston ever produced, including the sainted SSD, DYS and Jerry's Kids...
Al should be smart and do legit reissues of SSD's "Kids" and "Get It Away," instead of getting pissed about bootlegs. The first Psycho EP should be reissued (it was rumored at one point)...
Siege's two demos were just issued on vinyl for the first time on Deep Six Records (there will be a CD eventually, as well). I liked Siege just as much as any Boston hardcore band from that period, except perhaps for Jerry's Kids...
what else are we missing, Southie? Impact Unit's demo was reissued... Deathwish's demo had a limited 7" pressing... I put out a DXA song and Tim Burton mentioned there may be more stuff but that was a few years ago he told me that... STP? Nah...
Sorry's second album, "The Way It Is," should be reissued, along with their live WERS set, which kicked ass...

how about a few of the Propeller songs? someone mentioned 21-645 and "Red Red" is a great song... so is "Copulator," which was a radio tape. I have an MP3 of it that I burned from a mix tape. How about "Let's Go To The Beach" by Arthur Slick and the Nice Girls? "The Law" by Artyard, from the Propeller cassette, which Jim Clements very graciously allowed me to reissue on one of my CD comps a few years back...
Leper?
Van Dykes--Heaven Will Fall? (the other side was on one of the Hyped 2 Death CD-Rs)
and the holy grail:
2x4s--Bridgeport Lathe... it's obscene that's not available...

Mr Al - if I could produce this fictional HC Mass Ave. type LP - I'd wish for a line up of:
Psycho
Cancerous Growth
Vile
Cheepskates
Outpatients
PTL Klub
Fucking Assholes - (I'm sure someone somewhere has some type of recordoing)
Kilslug
Freeze
Sorry
Add some other bands with New England connection;
Vatican Commandos
Chronic Disorder
Verbal Assault
Actually in a perfect world - the one project I wish I could do would be to a Richie Parsons discography collection- just imagine the material would be covered..

I always thought "My Best Friend" was better than "Knock Me Down Again".
Couldn't they have used a better Real Kids' song? I understand avoiding "All Kindsa Girls" (it was already on other DYI comps), but why not "Just Like Darts"?
When did "Psycho Blonde" come out?
Was "Young Fast Iranians" originally the FUs or were they already the Straw Dogs; in either case, was it early enough to qualify?
Can I stretch the time line a bit and ask to include Big Dipper's "Faith Healer"?

What was the name of Dapper O'Neill's song he cut and released on a 45 in the early 80s?
The Irish Belly Dancer or something?

jesus christ... Dapper O'Neil... "Nelly, The Irish Belly Dancer" was the song and I heard that played on the radio...
"Young Fast Iranians" was on both the FU's "Hurt You" album and and on one of the first Straw Dogs records.. either the EP or LP, but I'm too lazy to go upstairs and look right now.

Wow, I'm glad people are still discussing this. Few things:
-- There's no hardcore because the feeling was that it was a different scene which would be anthologized elsewhere. Too bad that never wound up happening...In retrospect "Alcohol" really should have been included though. But the idea was that "Knock Me Down" was one of the first songs people ever slam-danced to, so it ends the disc as a bridge into the hardcore era.
-- Couldnt use All Kindsa Girls because its on another DIY volume. Do the Boob seemed obvious because its about Boston.
-- Don't forget that the Neats "Six" was on a Propeller cassette, so that scene isn't ignored altogether. Also, the Dangerous Birds kinda represent it. I wanted as many "hits" as possible, so those came at the expense of some of the more esoteric and pre-1977 stuff. (I also wedged in a couple personal favorites, esp. the Maps). Even left out a hit or two-- the Fools "It's a Night for Beautiful Girls" should maybe have been there too. Tried not to have any of the same people twice, so no Lyres/DMZ or Classic RUins/Babys Arm.
-- the 2X4's weren't from Boston (yet) so we couldnt use 'em,
-- Was instructed to stay out of the 80s, but stretched it so we could have the Del Fuegos track (which was and is pretty rare). I always hoped ther could be a second volume, which would open with Wah-Hey (Turbines) and Come to Where It's At (Prime Movers), then go into the Dumptruck/V. Suns/Blackjacks/Big Dipper/Salem 66/Bags era. Anyone wanna put up the money?

It's not on the soundtrack because it wasn't in the original release of the film. I forget what was in its place. The Damned, I think, but it's been a while. At some point the original song could no longer be used (a money issue, I think), so "Young Fast Iranians" ended up being substituted. It's the Straw Dogs' version that's in the movie, isn't it?

I don't know - I still think for a tiny geographical city like Boston - the area produced some amazing music. I'll admit - it was also the thrill of being involved at that time that added to it as well as the parochialism and area loyalty us Bostonians are bred with.

Who here saw any of these bands or was even alive then?
I will say growing up in that time period when hardcore was this new and different musical movement (i.e. nothing quite like it before), Boston had a great scene. Some great bands that, to me for the most part, I can still listen to today. I'm in awe at the originality and the overall great songs that came out of that era. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, compares to that today. Everything is rehashed and unoriginal, as well as "categorized" into smaller genres that produce such close-minded kids nowadays that only like music if it's "street punk", "pop punk", etc.......I love talking to some people who begin to talk about the "old school" hardcore days and then they start referring to madball and biohazzard
I am so proud to have grown up in a time of such a great movement.

no, nothing QUITE compares to that but there are still bands that hit me nearly as hard--not just rehashing but taking the energy of hardcore, keeping it raw and kick-ass and fresh-sounding... 9 Shocks Terror, for instance, are a hardcore punk band with diverse influences who are damn close to the equal of those bands from 'back in the day.' So is World Burns To Death. I'm still excited about hardcore... it wasn't the case for a long time but it had a real resurgence in recent years.
yes, Jerry's Kids' LP was the best X-Claim release...

Hey...wasn't T. Max in Artyard? "The Law" is a great song. I always loved that one. And 21-645 were amazing. I saw them live a few times. Randall Gibson is now playing with Eric Martin & the Illyrians. Anyone know whatever happened to Phil?
I also agree that we had a really good H/C scene and to compare it to other cities like LA and NY and DC is just pointless. I have fond memories of all-ages shows at the Media Workshop, Gallery East, Channel, Paradise and the scattered church and YMCA shows (I put on a show at the Northeastern Y with Killroy, Cancerous Growth, Post Mortem, Siege and Abortion Squad back in July of 1984). I don't think any of us that grew up back then could've ever guessed just what an impact that genre or scene would have on the kids TODAY. We were all part of a pioneering culture that never really died so that seems like a positive thing to me. It's kind of like...the more things change the more they stay the same.
FYI -- I'd like to see The Dark included on a comp like Mass Ave. They were fun!
