I'm reading another board where a bunch of people are defending the Confederacy and yelling that it's time to take their guns to DC and "do it right this time"..

This board has nothing close to that kind of lunacy.

there is a backlog, mostly spammers, some valid requests, many to go through, it's easier just to get the people who have applied and still bother to check this site out, and some have already contacted T.

maybe "drive" wasn't the best description.

and before you laugh, even the other site has had problems with spammers.

To register a new member I must put in a password. I could just assign one, but I'm letting them choose what they will remember. They can always change it.

This is very suspicious.

Believe me, I'm just dealing with the technology in a way I can understand. I do not know how to discern between a spammer trying to register and a real person. Having them email me makes it feel more real to me. And it's working. New people are signing up.
