WRONG

Listen to all my exes live in Texas. Honestly he's one of the only ones still in the real honky tonk tradidition

But he plays it poorly and in a top 40 radio way. That "All My Exes" tune is just top 40 country sounding crap.

You need to get out more if you're thinking George Strait is real honky tonk music. Yikes.

Flipper

Years back, as I was busy expanding my country music horizons, George Strait was one of the artists I wished I hadn't bothered with. Fucker cost me $11.99 for a Cd full of some of the bladnest, fartiest country tunes I've ever heard.

He sucks.

You need to listen to more real honky tonky (and more George Strait) if you think he's not. I love it when people try to slag modern country when they really don't know anything about. I've been listening to country music my whole life (all old and new) and George Strait's songs are great and so is his singing. If you want pop country go listen to Carrie Underwood but as far as someone who's continuing the honky tonk tradition today you don't have to look any farther than Strait (or Alan Jackson for that matter.)
nueva jerk
i remember watching a sox game (must have been against the rangers) many moons ago and bob montgomery was PSYCHED that george strait was performing at the park afterwards.

Just because they are "continuing the honky tonk tradition" doesn't mean they are any good. In fact, I think I'd rather listen to Toby Keith. At least he has that "Beer For My Horses" tune with Willie Nelson and there is no denying that "Courtesy of the Red White and Blue" is a classic.

George Strait is continuing the Honky Tonk tradition insofar as he hasn't draped all his songs in countrypolitan string sections, but that's it.

Otherwise he's bloodless and dullsville.

countrypolitan was over a long long time ago. he's making records that don't sound like warmed over pop rock like the rest of modern country

ummmmmm ok

Instead of George Strait, can I listen to: The Derailers, The Hollisters, Dwight Yoakam, Dave Insley, Kelly Willis, Lyle Lovett, Dale Watson, Billy Joe Shaver, or a shit load of others?

Not Toby Keith, though, Thanks.

Oh, and Alan Jackson sucks too.

In effect, then, you're damning him with faint praise, a la, "David Sanborn is a great jazzman because he's not quite as vacuous as Kenny G."

Saying A is better than B does not absolve A of being crap.

Whatever man, listen to what you want, you're missing out. Dwight Yoakam is great but I'd much much rather listen to George Strait or Alan Jackson than Lyle Lovett. Speaking of Alan Jackson, listen to "Who Say You Can't Have it All" and tell me that's not hardcore country music

Ehh whatever. I'm an unabashed modern country fan. I think that the songwriting and musicianship is better than pretty much anywhere else in pop music (at least on the radio) and 10% of the time a song comes along that really moves me. That's a pretty high percentage if you really think about it.

I just don't agree. Strait and Jackson seem like pop country guys to me. Lyle has some decent stuff. Loved his tour with Joe Ely.

i've been listening to the roadhouse country station on satellite radio a lot lately and i've come to the conclusion that if you didn't write "red roses for mama" or you aren't glen campbell, you should stop writing music.
