Since this was my first time in the Mix CD Trade I decided to keep it simple and use pretty much stuff I like a lot. I am a sucker for crunchy guitars, handclaps and sappy back up vocals. All can be found here in abundance. Most of the tracks are from cds that I give heavy rotation. I won’t write a run down for each track but I will say that track 4 almost brings the mix to a crashing halt. Maybe it’s just me but after hearing the way track 3 ends it just seems that track 4 starts of too quiet or slow. Fortunately I think it redeems itself not long after. I really wanted to have a Buddy Holly song on my mix and I thought that tracks 3 and 5 give a modern spin on the Buddy Holly sound. I hope you guys get a kick out of my mix.

this is probably my favorite of the discs i've heard so far (like 5 or 6 of 'em), and will likely remain tops. so many good powerpop songs and whatnot. he actually used the pointed stick song i debated throwing on mine. i also forgot how much i liked this particular tina luchessi band (track 3), even though it isn't the trashwomen or the bobbyteens. the only track i could do without is "last cigarette," but the other 23 are pretty awesome. and any mix using the original version of "hanging on the telephone" is a winner. he could've put that on a disc 24 times and i would've been happy. well done, sir.

well done, sir.

I couldn't agree more. Besides being my good friend, Mr. Whirly has introduced me to much cool music over the years. This is a great mix, really capturing the hooky/power pop vibe.

I got it early, and probably listened to it 5 times before I even got the rest of 'em.

IT ROCKS!

Man, what a great mix. Very very pleased - made a crappy day much more acceptable.

1. Lost Time - Plimsouls
Many good songs by these guys - glad to see you avoided "A Million Miles Away," which is great, but their "What I Like About You."

2. That's What the Little Girls Do - Knack
Probably the weakest track on the mix - the Knack have many better songs - but still, not bad.

3. That's the Way I Want It - Tina & the Total Babes
Good stuff!

4. Oh, Boy! - Buddy Holly & the Crickets
At first I was troubled by the inclusion of this, but it works, anachronism or no!

5. Hanging On the Telephone - Nerves
I don't think this is as good as the Blondie version - it always sounded like a demo to me, even before I knew what demos were. Great song though!

6. Let Go - Dirty Looks
Oh man! What a shock. I hadn't checked the song list, and when I heard that descending guitar riff, I said "Wow - this sounds like 'Let Go' - weird. Then the bass and drums came in - it's amazing how many things I thought I would never hear anywhere but at home have shown up on these mic disks! Wahoo!

7. Sleeping Aides & Razorblades - Exploding Hearts
Dag - this is fantastic! Two minutes thirty eight seconds of perfection!

8. Crash and Burn or Fly - Dimestore Haloes
What a swell tune. The exploding Hearts track is a tough act to follow, but this does a good job of holding its own.

Gotta go - I'll finish up later!

Mr. Whirly: have given some songs 3 listens, some two, and overall I like your mix, one of the more enjoyable ones so far though I still have a bunch more to listen to. I like the idea of virtually all upbeat pop songs. The cover art was appropriate, clever, good. My top tier of songs are the ones by:
The Knack -- I hadn't heard that one in a long time, love the melody.
The Pointed Sticks tune was a favorite, though please tell me that you've noticed that he takes the melody line from Townshend's "Let My Love Open the Door" "verbatim" as far as I can tell. Wonder if Pete has ever heard this?
Elvis Costello -- hadn't heard this in ages, and then only once maybe. Infectious.
Any Trouble -- who are these guys? Liked it a lot. Is their other stuff good?
DBs -- a nice minor key sounding riff, just a really good pop song. Again, what's their story?
Dogmatics: I presume that's Thayer St. in Providence? Good find here. Is this an old Boston band? or more likely a Providence band?
Dramarama: captures the sort of crazy rituals caused by cigarette addiction well.
Tina and the Total Babes -- this one grew on me, now I really dig it.
Second tier: Plimsouls; Dimestore Haloes; Tina and the Total Babes; Prince; Cheap Trick. Holly and the italians get special mention for that intro, and the succeeding giggle.
The Who -- of course, would have preferred one I hadn't heard, though the nod of respect is respected and it's good to draw attention to old classics sometimes.
Thanks! -- and I hope you have another good one for the next trade.

Whoa Boy!

My best time ever. Running with Mr. Whirly's head boppin' mix, it hardly seemed like work. I'm taking this one with me, to a Thanksgiving Day Run. The 8th annual Gobble Gobble Gobble 4 mile foot race in Somerville Massachusetts to benefit Project Soup & Somerville Track.

Post Race at the Burren

The flyer for said foot race, reads: "Be thankful...be very thankful."

And I am.

This mix was an undiluted; pure delight.

Pointed Sticks: I've never caught the Townsend reference. I've always thought they nicked the Sweet's "Fox On the Run".

Any Trouble were a Stiff Records band from the late 70's early 80's. The song is from their first album Where Are All the Nice Girls? which is still in print. I highly recommend this album. I bought it for "Second Choice" but pretty much love everything on it. I quickly became one of my favorite albums.

dB's were a quirky power pop group from the early 80's. Most fans prefer their first two records but I find I like the one (Sound of Music) this song came from just as much. Unfortunately this album can be a bitch to get a hold of. I was able to score a cd for a great price.

the Dogmatics were a Boston band from the 80's. They were kinda considered to be the Boston version of the Replacements. The title refers to the Thayer St in Boston where they used to have a loft that I guess was the place to be back in the day. Apparently when bands like the Replacements would play Boston they would end up staying at the loft. It was a bit before my time but I some of the older NBers have some stories. Their stuff is out of print including a cd that had pretty much all of their recorded output but their records are pretty easily found especially in the Boston area.

Tina & the Total Babes. I'm a huge fan of this disc. All of the songs are catchy as hell and I love the way Tina comes off as really ballsy. Another one of my favorite cds.

I'm glad you liked my mix. I really got a kick out of making it.

I'm glad you liked it. I can see how the mix would go well with a run as it is pretty much fast pace and catchy stuff. Good luck with the Thanksgiving day run and thanks for your kind words.

What a great mix, kept me in a good mood and energised when I was tired from cleaning up the place on a rainy day.

I'm going to have to check out more from Tina & the Total Babes. I think I need some Plimsouls too, I forgot all about that band.

I highly recommend Tina & the Total Babes. The whole album is catchy as hell. I'm a huge fan of The Plimsouls. I think they have so much more than just their hit "A Million Miles Away". This song came of of the cd Plimsouls Plus... which is out of print and can be pretty pricey on disc. It's cool because it has both their ep and first album on it. I'm glad you got a kick out of my mix.

Yeah I agree with you on the Bobbyteens stuff. It's not as poppy as the Tina & the Total Babes but still catchy and worth getting. I was listening to the Bobbyteens Not So Sweet the other day and I had to ask myself why doesn't this disc get heavy rotation in my player? I gotta admit though I would love for Tina & the Total Babes to come out with a new album.

that record is particularly good. a lot of the rest has been sorta hit or miss, but definitely more on the hit side. would still love to hear another trashwomen record, though. that was my favorite band of hers.

i forgot to ask her about a new total babes record in vegas. though somehow i doubt it'll happen. she's been playing a fair amount of shows with her other band, the deadly weapons. dunno if you've heard them, but they're more of a straight-away punk band. not great, but not awful.

I have the Deadly Weapons single "You're So Selfish" single and I like em but not nearly as much as her poppier side with the Bobbyteens and Total Babes. What is the Trashwomen stuff like? I've wondered what that stuff souned like since I got into her other stuff.

the trashwomen stuff is very noisy, lo-fi garage rock stuff. it's with some girls that also ended up going on to the bobbyteens, and were also in the spoiled brats (early ripoff records band) and the brentwoods (radio x). i can make copies of all of it (i think i have the brats 45 on a comp too) if you'd like.
