Kirsten plays keyboards in the Faux (in case some of you know her only by first name.) She is also an amazing artist as well as being very genuine and positive to everyone she encounters.

She was hit by a car on Saturday morning while riding her bike. She was rushed to the hospital with a serious head injury and remains there on life support. They had not expected her to make it through yesterday. She did, although she is still not conscious. For anyone who is interested in sending cards or flowers, she is at Mass General.

I didn't know her, but my prayers and wishes go out to her.

Needless to say, I am more scared than ever to ride my bike out in traffic.

Our friend Laurel Kirtz sent out this message about bicycle and driving safety and I'd really like to share it:

************

Dear Everyone,

I am prompted to write this because a friend was hurt in a road accident and
she is in the hospital in a coma.

I hope you don't mind the email format, but I hoping to share this with as
many people as possible.

Let me start:
Statistically, young people are in more road accidents than older people.
Do people grow cautious with age? They certainly become more experienced.

I was lucky when my brother Aaron, who was hit by a cab while on his bike in
NYC, only hurt his leg.
I didn't have to worry whether he'd live or die.

My brother will never ride his bike in NYC again. That's just the way it is.

WHATEVER REASONS ENABLE PEOPLE TO BECOME MORE SAFE ON THE ROAD, whatever
those reasons are,
THEY OFTEN HAPPEN TOO LATE. My brother got his leg smashed.

The driver who hit Kirsten Malone, was that person speeding? Were they
tired? In what ways could they have been a safer driver??!

That person was not driving the way my teacher in driver's re-education
course would drive.
He was a slow, sensible and safe person. We all need to be more like him.

We all need to put safety first.

- Don't take unreasonable risks.
- Don't push yourself too hard (like riding your bike while tired or drunk).
- Please wear safety gear: helmets, lights, reflectors, seatbelts, bright
colors.
- GO SLOW. Don't blow lights like you're invincible.
Don't speed in your car...there's no good reason for it, esp. if you hit a
person, pet or goose at a goddamn goose crossing.
- Don't be unsafe in the pursuit of revenge on the road. What good would
that be?
- Do not create aggravated anger. Be the calm, cool and collected one.
- Listen to 740 WJIB if you need help with road rage.
- OBEY TRAFFIC LAWS! Don't go the wrong way down a one-way, and if you are,
then do it slowly and cautiously.
- STOP BEING COOL. Nothing has ever helped NOONE as much as "being cool".
When you're in the hospital, it's not cool anymore.
- TRADE PLACES....if you haven't ridden a bike much and you drive a car,
then spend a day riding a bike to the places you need to go, even if you
take the T part of the time. If you've never driven a car in the city, don't
pretend it's easy. Drive a friend's car from one end of town to another,
during the day, and you'll learn quite a bit.
- If you ride a motorcycle, don't ride like a bicyclist. That's stupid, rude
and fucking "cool".
- If you drive, always give bicyclists the proper right of way. They get the
least respect of anyone on the road, less than pedestrians!
- Be patient. In patience is your soul.

From this day forward, put safety first for Kirsten - respect the lesson she
shows us.
Do it for yourself, do it for your friends, do it for your family.

Show and Tell the world how to be safe and maybe a few less tragedies will
happen.

From
Laurel Kirtz

I lost a best friend 8 years ago due to a bike accident head injury. Kristen has always been one of the most friendly and creative people I have known. My thoughts are with her.

Although I don't know Kristen and have never seen The Faux, I am hoping she'll pull through and have a quick recovery!

I've been hit twice by motorists who weren't paying attention, once on a bike (side swiped and was bumped off of the road into a ditch - lots of scratches & bruises, but no broken bones) and once as a pedestrian (again side swiped, clipped by a mirror, hell of a bruise on my shoulder!). People driving need to be more careful when pedestrians & cyclists are nearby.

That's awful. She is in my thoughts.

I know several people who either ride or drive as though they've got some kind of vendetta, and that's fucking scary. Cyclists are definitely considered to be "less-than" by a great number of drivers. Still, I've also got friends who will literally chase down a driver who cut them off while they were on their bikes, and that's just fucking crazy, too.

Let's all be careful out there.

I heard this news on Saturday and it made me feel sick. Kirsten is one of the sweetest girls in Boston. Always treating all people kindly, she always puts a smile on my face. I'm really hoping she pulls out of this. My best wishes and thoughts go to her and her family.

Motorists beware, bikers be careful. Wear a helmet and respect the rules of the road.
