Here are some shots I took Monday at the House of Blues. Great show. Both bands sounded great even after a few years off. Bim has not preformed for about 7 years and one could not tell.
First time I have shot there and I learned a good amount. More can be found >>>>>>>>>> HERE <<<<<<<<<< These will only be up for a limited time do to contract. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Bim Skala Bim ![]() ![]() ![]() |

John - how did you get permission to bring in a camera? I wanted to shoot some pics of Bim but was told there were no cameras allowed?

They require a photo pass and they put limitations on the usage of the photos. Really? The House of Blues puts limitations on the use of photos, strictly because they have been taken inside the House of Blues - irrespective of the band or their management? Never heard of that before. How did you acquire the photo pass? |

Never heard of that before. How did you acquire the photo pass? Not only that, but my understanding is you are also only allowed to take photos for the first 3 songs of a band's set. I know that for our not, not only did we have those limitations, but the pass was only valid for our set. |

Never heard of that before. How did you acquire the photo pass? Yes. From what I understand it's normal for larger venues to put limitations on the shots. The bands could also put more limitations. The main point is to keep them editorial usage only. I agree with that idea and when I take shots, even without a contract, I aim for that too. I have heard there are some places that try to put ridiculous things in their contracts like they own the shots. If I saw one of those contracts, the camera would not come out of the bag. HoB is good in that regard and in general I agree with their aim. As to how I got the pass I'd rather keep that under wraps. Sorry. |

does this sound a little over-the-top?
i could see if it was some national act with lots of corporate handler-types, but this show....? and what's the big deal - like HOB should be making $$ off photos shot in their establishment? seems kind of draconian |

Those are great pictures.
I enjoy reading the posts on another board of 16 year old Bosstones fans bitching that they're getting too popular. |

Yeah kind of like a friend of mine was bitching the other night about how he went to a series of Phish shows (I am not a fan) and he was all pissed they repeated a couple songs two nights in a row.... |

Yes. From what I understand it's normal for larger venues to put limitations on the shots. The bands could also put more limitations. that's not been my experience, in shooting in almost 50 different venues. HoB is the only place i've seen a venue-specific waiver. the only venue issue i've had is when i wanted to shoot a John Zorn performance down @ 92Y in NYC and the union stage hands told me i couldn't shoot there unless i paid a $5000 'union buyout' fee. fuck unions. The main point is to keep them editorial usage only. I agree with that idea and when I take shots, even without a contract, I aim for that too. which is pretty much all you can do by default anyway...you can't sell them for commercial purposes w/o a model release. I have heard there are some places that try to put ridiculous things in their contracts like they own the shots. If I saw one of those contracts, the camera would not come out of the bag. HoB is good in that regard and in general I agree with their aim. those waivers come from bands and their management, not venues. some are standard (ie, editorial only), some dictate usage only for the media outlet you are shooting for (ie, you can't syndicate or otherwise use the photos in any other way, even editorially, w/o written permission), and others are much more onerous like you mentioned, w/ a total copyright grab w/o compensation to the photographer. hello, Them Crooked Vultures. As to how I got the pass I'd rather keep that under wraps. Sorry. i'd imagine you have an in w/ the band or label, seeing as you got atypical stage access (photo #4). btw, nice shots (though the bim shots seem a bit soft). |

Tim you have brought up some very good points. When it comes to larger venues you have shot more of them then I have so I will default to your experience.
This is the first time I have shot with the 70-200mm and the 7D. I agree those shots are a little soft. I need to do some adjustments on the 7d to take that in to account. The 24mm as always is sharp and is my favorite lens at the moment. Thanks for the comments. |

Thanks for the comments. yeah sometimes lenses like that have a sweet spot as far as aperture and zoom setting where it's tack sharp also (obviously) is the shutter speed thing, but those don't look like they are soft cuz of shutter speed, i think it might just have been because it was wide open what brand lens and what was the max. aperture on it, like f/3.5? |

The max aperture of the Canon 70-200L IS is f/2.8. In a perfect world I would stop it down to 4.0 but I needed the stop. Even fully open I needed to shoot at ISO6400. Most of the shots where in the area of 1/125 or so but there where a few in to 1/60 or less. Those where not very good. Looking over the shots I think I need to tune the 7D to this lens. The other lens 24mm I stopped down a bit to f/1.6 from f/1.4. Much easier to shoot with that lens not fully open and I could drop the ISO to 1600 or so. |
