PORTLAND, Ore. – Cereal and snack maker Kellogg Co. says it will not renew its sponsorhip contract with Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps because he has acknowledged smoking marijuana last fall. The Battle Creek, Mich.-based company said Thursday that Phelps's behavior — caught on camera and published Sunday — is "not consistent with the image of Kellogg."
The company put Phelps on boxes of its Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes.
Phelps has kept the backing of many sponsors since the photos surfaced that showed him inhaling from a marijuana pipe.
Phelps's agent was not immediately available to comment.
Kellogg says its contract with Phelps expires at the end of the month.

With the economy going the way it is I'm sure a few more companies will use this as an excuse to drop him and save some dough.

The founder was a doctor who put together a sanitarium and health regimen to help a lot of people. His corn flake recipe became popular and eventually the company supported all of his health efforts for the betterment of man.

Then his brother, William, stole the company out from under him, closed the sanitarium, and became a self-centered asshole millionaire. So Kelloggs as we know it has always been owned and operated by Bill Kellogg, the fuckhead who was all about himself at the expense of others.

Am I supposed to believe that Kelloggs was really going to sign up an Olympian athelete to sell breakfast cereal 6 months past the pinnacle of his popularity?

20 bucks says this endorsement deal was not going to be renewed at the end of the month no matter what.

I'm still laughing at the 3 month suspension. The thing is, a three month suspension seems like the functional equivalent of a slap on the wrist. Given the pictures of him lately, I doubt he would compete during that time period anyway. They also know how valuable he is to the sport and in 2012 this whole scandal will long be forgotten.

I read that Kellogg entered into their relationship with him in 2004 so either they didn't care that he had just rec'd a DUI or didn't drop him when they did. So if they are the morality police, I question their judgement. My guess is that their advertising budget is smaller due to the economy and they wouldn't have renewed his contract anyway and are using this for a little free wholesome publicity. Just my opinion though.

The fact that he is telling papers that he is thinking about not competing in 2012 (which would seem to me he is retiring) right after those other sponsors had stuck their necks out for him is pretty outrageous. I have actually always thought he was a bit of an arrogant jerk. And other than swimming fast I have no idea what would have made him a hero to so many in the first place.

The fact that in 2009 it's still considered a big deal to acknowledge that you smoke pot blows my mind. Really, there's not already enough in the world to get needlessly worked up over?

Stupid.

Kelloggs has replaced Phelps, a healthy athlete, with a spokesperson more in line with what thier sugar-filled shit actually does to the body:

Stupid.

The fact that people who smoke pot assume that everyone else should have the same cavalier attitude towards breaking that law that they do demonstrates exactly why those who don't smoke get bothered by it.

I understand you think it should be legalized. But the fact is, it isn't. So it's still breaking the law, regardless of what you think or feel it should be. This is the crux of why people make a big deal about it. Not because of what they think about the drug itself. Because of the dumbass entitlement attitude pot smokers have co-opted in recent years.

Protest all you want, and petition for the law to be changed. That's your right.

But until it's changed officially and for good - it's still against the law, and breaking drug laws will ALWAYS have lasting effects on people's public perception of you. Especially if you're a world famous public persona and representative of your Country's officially sanctioned amateur sports team. This really isn't that hard to understand, actually.

Had he done what the idiot pothead activists on this site recommended and drawn up some Cheetos cheeze covered Pro-Marijuana manifesto to send to the USOC, emphatically stating his love for all things Jam Band and Hacky Sack, and told them to stuff it with their stupid laws and shit, his suspension would have been much longer. probably for life.

They only gave him 3 months because he fessed up and apologized.

All he said was that it blew his mind that it was such a big deal. I didn't see any reallying cry for legalization in that post.

And I simply explained why it was a big deal to some people.

It's not the drug. It's the principal of the thing.
