ONE of my biggest pet peeves.
Rarely does a song fade away, that I do not wonder how it should have been written an actual end. Thoughts? |

I don't have a problem with fade outs. Sometimes it can be very effective. It worked for Hey Jude!
But I love it when they reissue remixes/remasters that include the stuff you never got to hear on the original, like on the 25th anniversary edition of Machine Head. It's great to hear the songs fall apart after the fades. Bands often have songs that fade out on the studio version, but they came up with endings for live shows. You can probably find live versions somewhere. |

It's justified. But only in about 5% of the songs that do it.
What's Going On. With or Without You...I can't thing of a possible change or way to end that. |

Hate them. Take the time, write an ending.

I've never had a fade out on anything I've played on but I don't mind them if they're done right (like ending with the big grand guitar solo & repeated chorus fading out type of thing).

They can occasionally be good, but 95% of the time, it's weak songwriting ...
fade out and fade back in can be cool in the right context. |

The fade is an effective way to get the hook of the tune running around inside your head.

I think fade outs are perfectly fine. If songs have them, it's because the band wanted it that way. Otherwise, they wouldn't have put one in.
Nobody had a problem with them for 50 years; why now? |

I've had a problem with them since I've bought my first record in 7th grade. almost 30 years ago. I like how subsequent James Brown reissues, include the band playing until they stop. I even made a joke in the studio recording an extra long song on the Liquor Tricks CD .... on the vocal track, I say ... "just FADE it" ... He didn't fade it, but Schleicher left me saying "fade it" at the end of the 9 minute song on the record. This post has been edited by TEX: Dec 18 2008, 03:24 PM |
