I know it's been discussed, but I finally got a copy of it and can't believe how good it is. Fucking unbelievable.

And it gets better with repeated listenings. It's the best thing I've bought in the last 6 months.

Buy Shame Club's album and you'll change your mind.

I still think the first two songs on Death Magnetic hold up to the past greats. Everything else is too up and down

In my book, "The Judas Kiss" and "Suicide and Redemption" make the whole disc worth owning, but I agree that there are some inconsistencies. I won't be throwing away my copies of Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets, that's for certain.

Jesus. I'm listening to the Shame Club track from the SR.com juke, and it could be the theme song for the entire website! Remind me to grab this next time I do a purchase, wouldya?

Just saw 'em last night in NYC for the Small Stone CMJ showcase. They're even better live.

The Guitar Hero version of Death Magnetic sounds better.

True.

Anyone know how the vinyl sounds? I'm still tempted to pick it up in that format, but really only if (a) I can find the money, and (b) it definitely sounds closer to the GH version than the CD version.

Considering most of the world realized immediately how bad St Anger was, I tend to doubt that.

It took me a good month to realize how terrible st anger was. I was still a Metallica fan boy then, in my teen years..

dont get me wrong, musically its a step in the right direction, but the recording is complete shit. its not even a matter of opinion, and if you cant recognize it you probably a) listen to music ripped to 128kpbs mp3 b) only listen to music in shitty ipod earbuds c) only listen to shitty metal that sounds nearly as bad, and/or d) are deaf.

Having to compare the "Guitar Hero" (a fucking video game) version of a given band's recording to the otherwise (ostensibly concurrently released) available album version...

Wow.

Then again, I heard the bass on Fall Out Boy's last Taco Bell commercial was much cheesier than the album version.

as ridiculous as the concept is flipper, the guitar hero version DOES sound better from a loudness standpoint, as they receieved an earlier mix before it was cranked to complete shit, and when i do listen to the album, thats the one i choose. still a shitty recording regardless though.

agreed. such an amazingly great album. i seriously keep cranking this one over and over. teh playing, teh arranging, everything is just stellar. fans who criticize this one are just clearly shellshocked from the pain of having been metallica fans for so long.

complaining about the production is kinda pointless
at least they didn't record it in Lars' garage or whatever

i think the first half is great (the second half not so much) my favorite tracks are #2 & #5

I was rooting for them on this record.

For a while, I only heard "Day that never comes" on the radio and was a little dissapointed.

Last week my G/F downloaded the full ablum. I have to say, that "Judas Kiss" and "This was just your life "makes it all worth while alone.

The playing is insane. Mind-boggling. I honestly didn't think Metallica had this sort of thing in them. Pure mastery of thrash on this record.... best album I've heard all year. Even the vocals rip. I never thought I'd ever have to take my hat off to Metallica but I have a whole new appreciation of them. If only Rick Rubin had been their collaborator for the past 15 years....
