it's ok if they're "ultimately redeeming" or have happy endings or whatever, but i love flicks that are mostly depressing / bleak as fuck... the kinda stuff that makes ya think maybe you don't have it so bad after all (y'know, sorta like watching COPS)... whaddaya got?

mask (cher, not carrey of course)
shawshank redemption
last exit to brooklyn (why wasn't this bigger?)
la vie en rose
paradise lost (west memphis three docu, never saw pt II)
eraserhead (maybe the bleakest flick ever)
glengarry glen ross
the days of wine & roses / leaving las vegas / the lost weekend <-- 3 best drinking movies EVAH
lenny
monster
monster's ball
runaway train / midnight cowboy <-- jon voight is god in these, train shoulda been bigger, get it
desert bloom (also w/voight)
lady sings the blues (why didn't diana ross do more acting? she killed in this)
star 80 <-- serious slit-your-wrists material
breaking the waves
shoot the moon

thx for your indulgence

The House of Sand and Fog is as good as it is depressing.
That is saying a lot on both counts.

Cinema Paradisio was kinda sad - but not sure if it counts as a 'sad movie'.

I think that Dancer In The Dark beats out Breaking The Waves for depressing, though.

Requiem For A Dream

Yes, that is bleak as fuck!

Also, two of the most depressing things I've even seen, Happiness and Your Friends and Neighbors (I think you've seen them both, coughlin).

Happiness wins for most depraved movie I think I've ever seen.

Owning Mahoney and Love Liza are pretty fucking sad as well.

All that guys' movies are really bleak-Your Friends and Neighbors was depressing both for a couple disturbing scenes, and because all 6 of the main characters were completely unlikeable, you couldn't root for or care about any of them.

It ain't a bleak movie, but The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill has a few really, really sad scenes- when he's talking about the first bird that died, and when he says his goodbyes to the flock.

I watched it last night for the 2nd time (and first time in 5 years) and found it to be both great and very sad at times.

Great movie. I remember the gay film reviewer for the Phoenix trashing the film because he didn't like the way Uncle Monty was portrayed. Struck a little close to home, I suspect.

My own personal saddest film - Downfall.

2nd mention of La Bamba, i had no idea, i always thought it supposed to be a happy thing, gotta check it out.
MDB is excruciating, good one!
i'd never have thought of seabiscuit, but yeah...!
i dunno how i overlooked elephant man, that's a top-tenner for sure.

mission --- the deniro / jungle thing? will hafta revisit, don't remember as such, but i know there were lotsa breasts... speakno' which, you could almost count Showgirls for having 10,000 breasts and still managing to be a complete snooze...

i'd say Apocalypse Now, but it's just... so beyond that all-around...

Yes.

The music alone was killing me.

Not unlike Crumb.

Some haunting shit.
