The House of Sand and Fog is as good as it is depressing. That is saying a lot on both counts. |

Cinema Paradisio was kinda sad - but not sure if it counts as a 'sad movie'.
I think that Dancer In The Dark beats out Breaking The Waves for depressing, though. |

Also, two of the most depressing things I've even seen, Happiness and Your Friends and Neighbors (I think you've seen them both, coughlin). definitely happiness, but the scene where the dog licks the railing is pretty funny... not sure on the other, will check... add: welcome to the dollhouse |

not sure on the other, will check... All that guys' movies are really bleak-Your Friends and Neighbors was depressing both for a couple disturbing scenes, and because all 6 of the main characters were completely unlikeable, you couldn't root for or care about any of them. |

It ain't a bleak movie, but The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill has a few really, really sad scenes- when he's talking about the first bird that died, and when he says his goodbyes to the flock.
I watched it last night for the 2nd time (and first time in 5 years) and found it to be both great and very sad at times. |

my ultimate favorite movie, which is also a sad movie: "Withnail and I" "It will die! It will die!!" Great movie. I remember the gay film reviewer for the Phoenix trashing the film because he didn't like the way Uncle Monty was portrayed. Struck a little close to home, I suspect. My own personal saddest film - Downfall. |

The Mission Million Dollar Baby La Bamba Seabiscut Elephant Man 2nd mention of La Bamba, i had no idea, i always thought it supposed to be a happy thing, gotta check it out. MDB is excruciating, good one! i'd never have thought of seabiscuit, but yeah...! i dunno how i overlooked elephant man, that's a top-tenner for sure. mission --- the deniro / jungle thing? will hafta revisit, don't remember as such, but i know there were lotsa breasts... speakno' which, you could almost count Showgirls for having 10,000 breasts and still managing to be a complete snooze... i'd say Apocalypse Now, but it's just... so beyond that all-around... |
