Personally, though, I wouldn't recommend "Incognegro".

"Willie and Joe" is a must-have for everyone.

Watchmen, Preacher, Sandman, 30 Days of Night-- all great GN's.

Thimble Theatre (Popeye) strips from the 1930s; Orphan Annie from the 30s and 40s; Dick Tracy and L'il Abner from the 40s and 50s; Pogo from the 1950s--all high quality stuff; seldom equalled, never surpassed.

I've only read Sandman of those-keep hearing about Watchmen, and I know I SHOULD, but it's kinda daunting.

I also love Y: the Last Man and Fables.

Watchmen is a masterpiece.

Read it once through, quickly, without slogging through all the back matter--should take less than 4 hours.

Then read it again, more slowly.

"In the 1950's, the "Superman" TV series was periodically interrupted by--- Superman! As Clark Kent grinned at the camera, he misused his super-influence by telling kids that Special K cereal was the most important part of a Kryptonian breakfast. "

Friend of mine went out with Phoebe.

He wasn't weird enough for her.

Also, he looked very much like her foster Dad.

MADAME FATAL

DC Comics, which bought properties from Quality in 1956, never put her in a story at all. The only one who did was comix writer/artist Kim Deitch (Hollywoodland), who did a new story in 1972 that purported to be about Madam Fatal. But inasmuch as she did things in it that it's hard to imagine a mainstream comic book character doing, there could be some question about the character's identity.

I know! "Leave those babies alone!"

That panel, if you remember it, looked exactly like him.

She also "did" him on a cover of the magazine he edited, Gnosis.

Here it is:

I disagree. Read every word first time through, I say. Makes it a much better experience.

Oh, and, although not a novel, I've been loving the Walking Dead. Can't stand the single issues, so I wait till their released in bound format. Fun, fast read.

I just read Watchmen....it's the only graphic novel I've ever read, and I loved it. It took a while to get into it, but I ended up thinking it was really, really great.

The Watchmen is fantastic. ALMOST makes me want to read more superhero comics. Almost...

I keep finding new series and they keep ending, which is kinda frustrating.

Some of the best i've come across:
Watchmen
V for Vendetta
Y: The Last Man
Sandman
Fables
Hellblazer
Preacher
Transmetropolitan
Lucifer

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and have but haven't got to yet.

All 4 out of 5 stars or better.

This Hellblazer is one of the very best for those who haven't read any of them:

HARD TIME
BY BRIAN AZZARELLO
ART BY RICHARD CORBEN

2001. DAVID BORING. DANIEL CLOWES.
The list was compiled in 2001.

Knowing what I know now I would add Transmetropolitan, Doom Patrol,
Preacher, Jimmy Corrigan and scores of others to the list.

I do tend to cite only those titles which have been collected in book form.
Hence, no citation of DC's pre-Vertigo "Wasteland" series, which I found
really impressive, and no cite for Pacific's EC-like Bruce Jones-edited
titles like "Alien Worlds" and "Twisted Tales". (See:
http://www.kcactive.com/aande/artfeat/artfeature2003_07.htm )

Here's an interesting essay ca. 1983:

http://www.reynos.com/Comicbooks/comics-out-of-comics.htm

Titles like:

The Authority
The Ultimates
Powers
The Walking Dead
The Punisher Max series
Stormwatch: Team Achilles

are all really good. The Marvel MAX series in general tends to be
exceptional, as is the Vertigo line. Just finished reading 13 of the 15 JOHN
CONSTANTINE, HELLBLAZER books. All but the first one are pretty solid.
