What kind? Hiwatts, yes, are awesome. I'm building a clone now (slow going, but nearing finish soon).

Ta-da!
Yes, Hiwatts are excellent for bass amplification. I play through a '73 DR103 100 watt top in the Bee's Knees and it sounds great. I've used it with a single 15" cab and also a 4x10". They're very reliable and built like tanks. Obviously the 200 watt top would be even better if you're going for the kill. |

The best bass amp I ever played through was an Acoustic, maybe a 370?
Didn't have the warmth of an Ampeg or HiWatt, but was durable and could really cut through. Haven't seen one in ages. |

Super durable, because they were actually built by former British naval engineer Harry Joyce and his team of former naval engineers to military spec. I think they insisted on not building more than something like 40 amps/month, which Dave Reeves (Hiwatt guy) agreed to. Even the PCB versions of the amps are very solid. Mind you, I'm talking about Hiwatts made before Reeves's death in the early '80s. I know little to nothing about today's Hiwatts, which are built by another company who got rights to the name. |

Complete agreement on your comments about the Hiwatt quality. The insides of my amps are just amazing - all leads cabled and laid out at right angles, turret boards for components - super easy to work on. A number of companies have held the name rights over the years. I have a mid 90's 50w 1x12 combo that was made by the Audio Brothers and it is built to the same standards and sounds just like my '70's tops. A division of the MusicGround stores holds the name for the current Hiwatts, and I have have heard good things about the construction and sound. Unfortunately, they are ridiculously expensive. |

Mr. Music had a Hiwatt 400 watt head and a Hiwatt 410/115 cab for a while that was built for the bassplayer in Coldplay. I did play through it and it was awesome but not 5 grand awesome which is what they wanted for it.

Not that I have the $5K to spend on that. . . |

Mark VI plays bass through a 200w Hiwatt head. yes, i do. loud and clear. sounds really good. it blew the back of my marshall 4x15, for real. you can get a nice 'faces' sound out of it. the 200s are made to run either 2 of 4 cabs. if you run one you have have a dummy plug. if you can get one cheap (mine was $1200) totally worth it. bullet proof amp. i like my 1973 marshall super bass better, however. |

I loved Acoustic bass amps and had three in my early days- very happy with my Gallien Krueger head for the last twenty years but I know that's too slick for a lot of you guys.
