Punxsutawney Phil Says, More Winter Options

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. - Brace yourself for more wintry weather. Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow Saturday, leading the groundhog to forecast six more weeks of winter.

The rodent was pulled from his stump by members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle, top-hat- and tuxedo-wearing businessmen who carry out the tradition.

Each Feb. 2, thousands of people descend on Punxsutawney, a town of about 6,100 people some 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, to celebrate what had essentially been a German superstition.

The tradition is that if a hibernating animal sees a shadow on Feb. 2 — the Christian holiday of Candlemas — winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says spring will come early.

That was the forecast from Gen. Beauregard Lee, Punxsutawney Phil's counterpart in Lilburn, Ga. Beau did not see his shadow Saturday morning at the Yellow River Game Ranch.

It was the third year in a row the two groundhogs' predictions differed.

Groundhog emerges from males' shadows

For years, the world of early spring harbingers has been an old boys' network dominated by Punxsutawney Phils and Buckeye Chucks. Massachusetts legislators want that to change.

Ms. G (that's short for Groundhog), a 4-year-old woodchuck from the Massachusetts Audubon Society's Drumlin Farm, has been nominated to be the state's first official groundhog. If approved by the Legislature this year, she would be the first female groundhog in the country to hold such a title.

"What does Punxsutawney Phil know about Massachusetts?" Christy Foote-Smith, sanctuary director at Drumlin Farm, said of the Pennsylvania rodent. "We need our own groundhog."

While some say the political climate seems right for a female woodchuck, there is a natural reason that the shadow-seeing had traditionally been left up to the males. Male woodchucks are the early risers of winter, driven out of hibernation by their desire to mate. Females, on the other hand, hang around their dens and wait for gentlemen callers.

But times may have changed.

"Don't you think the nation is ready for an official female groundhog?" said Jan Kruse, an Audubon spokeswoman.

Found by a family when she was a pup, apparently abandoned, Ms. G oversees Groundhog Day festivities at Drumlin Farm, where a grass-roots campaign is underway for statewide recognition; more than 220 people have signed a petition on the website massaudubon.org supporting her appointment.

"She's currently running unopposed," Kruse said. "But who knows, there may be a strong write-in candidate."

The fact that everyone can relate is a big reason for the continued appeal of `"Groundhog Day,'' out this week as a ``15th Anniversary Edition.'' The brilliant dark comedy (full disclosure: ``Groundhog Day'' is my favorite film) follows cynical, self-involved TV weatherman Phil Connors -- Bill Murray in his richest performance -- who goes through the same Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pa. (actually Woodstock, Ill.), waking up to Sonny & Cher's ``I Got You Babe,'' stepping in the same deep puddle, ad infinitum.

"The key to 'Groundhog Day' for any of us,'' writer-director Harold Ramis says in a new commentary, ``is having the insight, courage and energy to make ... changes when you come to those moments when you could make the same mistake again (but don't).''

Andie MacDowell plays the kind TV producer Phil falls for during his endless stay -- estimated at 10 years by Ramis in the extras.

Extras: New deleted scenes, one of which is worthwhile; colorful short about groundhogs (aka woodchucks, or marmots); making-of shorts; commentary.
