I'm still saying it to friends that I'm seeing for the first time this year, and I know I'm not the only one. But what's the cut-off date? End of January?

I was thinking about this on Thursday when someone on the train wished another person a happy new year. It baffled me. I say January 2nd is the cut off point.

Let's agree that it's January 13th.

The "Happy New Year" salutation is said in the spirit of the holiday itself. It sounds totally stupid if said after January 2, even if you run into friends you haven't seen since before Dec. 31. It's kinda like saying "Merry Christmas" on Dec. 29th or "Happy Fourth of July" on July 15th.
