Bra, can't believe you slept on The Who, they were pretty much my favorite during high school, drinkin' in the woods with Who's On First crankin'. Plus, we used to go in town and watch Quadrophenia every chance we had. Seen 'em live 4 times, bra, even without Moon, still rocked.

Bra, you should know the Who by now! Put on Live at Leeds and rock the fuck out!

They turned the world onto Skynyrd, making them honorary Southerners, in the same way that Roger Moore's James Bond earned honorary Southerner status.

live at leeds is most amazing.

I taught myself to play the drums by listening to Tommy.

Try to get your hands on the live at the isle of wight DVD, it'll blow your mind.(there's also a really good hendrix at IOW and possibly a Tull one as well)

The best Who video I've seen is the Tanglewood show from 1970...proshot by Bill Graham Presents. Jethro Tull's opening act is out there too,

I highly recommend The Kids Are Alright. One of the greatest rock and roll movies of all time. If not the greatest.

You mention the WZLX connection and it reminds me once again that it is really a shame that so many people think of The Whoonly in their classic rock dinosaur phase (Won't Get Fooled Again, Baba O'Reilly, Squeezebox, etc.). They had so many incredibley funny and brilliant releases in the period before Tommy. Take a listen to some tunes off 1966' "A Quick One While He's Away". John Entwistle's "Whiskey Man" is one of the great Who tunes of all time. There are so many others. Listen to the brillance of a tune like "Melencolia" or "Tattoo".

Regarding Moon and the horse tranqulizers, that story is most likey a bit of myth. He did o.d. at the Cow Palace in 1973 during their Quadrophenia tour (I have it on DVD). He did have PCP in his system. He was apparently drinking with a girl before the show. The girl nearly died that night and Moon (to quote Townshend) "looked dead". Still, I think the elephant tranqulizer story might be a bit of a fabrication even though Townshend has repeated it. Tony Fletcher's book on Keith Moon is your best source to break through a lot of these legends and fables.

Well, I do think it is a period of their history that needs to be covered. However, I can see why it is glazed over. I just hate that the 30 Years of Maximum R&B box set and video felt it necessary to include stuff from that 1989 Vegas Who tour.

Yeah, Scott Haplin. He did a decent job that night. He looked like a mere waif though behind Moon's vast drum kit.

I have perhaps their better moments from that era on DVD. It is their concert they did for the Rockaplast t.v. show in Essen Germany back in March of 1981. They shared the bill with The Grateful Dead. I thought The Who's playing in 1981 had some degree of fire. Pete was in his cocaine, heroin and brandy phase but if anything it gave him of an edge as a performer. Let's face it, the "It's Hard" era shows from 1982 were kind of boring and punch the clock. This was due in part to the fact that Townshend was sober and simply wanted to pay off some debits. His heart wasn't into it.

This question is for either A.I. or John D, did this Who documentary have any new footage or interviews? I think at this point I may have seen most of all the 70's concert footage that is currently available.

I didn't get a chance to see it the other night (picking it up tomorrow), but I'll let you know. It is supposed to have some "new" stuff.

BTW, A.I. mentions the Tanglewood show video (and it is great indeed) and I've seen the Tull set from that show and it is great as well. Some incredibly splendid guitar tone and playing from Martin Barre (also playing a Hiwatt, don't you know).

I want the London Coliseum show from '69!

Judging from the brief clips of Happy Jack and I'm A Boy I have seen from the London Coliseum show, it looks like one that could potentially match Tanglewood. Still, Tanglewood is by the far the best I have seen. I watched it all again this past Saturday night.

They did have the 1964 footage that Lambert & Stamp filmed for promotional purposes.

I'm planning on getting the DVD tomorrow night and hope to have a review by Wednesday or Thursday.

My greatest hope is that they eventually release stuff like the Colisseum show, Tanglewood, Houston, etc.

Oh yeah, they did show the band doing a version of "Who Are You" that was filmed at the Kilburn show that went unused (hic!).

I would like to see the Kilburn show in its entirety. I know it isn't a great show but I would be interested for historical purposes. I am really suprised they have yet to officially release Tanglewood and Houston. The camera angles are great for Tanglewood and good for Houston. Also, both performances are amazing in their own ways.

How much of this did they have? That footage has been seen briefly in TKAA. Did they have more than one tune? I have a bootleg of The High Numbers. They were stretching it out onstage even back then.
