Yeah. Thanks doc. Thanks to a pretty serious shoulder injury, and impending surgery that will be followed by a lengthy recovery - i'm not allowed to play drums.
This fucking blows. Good thing I suck at them so the world isn't missing much -- hah. |

Well, look at it this way, maybe now you could take up a musical instrument.
This one time, when I was 17, at the end of the night, the bar owner said "You guys are great. Come over here, I wanna buy the band a drink. Bring the drummer, too." True story." Good luck with that shoulder, by the way. |

Em is within your reach. Let your soul sing. And it will help you play "Free Bird."

I'm sorry to hear about that.... Having not read all of the posts, and rushing once again as I do to comment, I'm curious as to the actual injury (pm me if you want). The reason I say this, is that those on the NB who know me or have cared about it, I've had rotator cuff surgery on each of my shoulders, the first being the most complicated----- and got thru both, healed up, regained strength (actually improved) and mobility and kept playing my drums.
Now---- it's not without it's complications---- My surgeon looked right at me and said, "If you play your drums even one day before I say you can, you'll never play again. If you do exactly as I say, you'll play for another 20 or 30 years." So, the bottom line is, you COULD be looking at 6 months or so of no drumming; But you're also probably looking at the same period of time away from firing a rifle as well, so this MAY be a blessing in disguise. Possibly a trip back state side? Anyway, don't worry about the drumming, just do the thing, and ABSOLUTELY, DEFINATELY, adhere to your physical therapy and you'll be fine. Know this tho----- A shoulder surgery such as my own, takes TWO years to be 100% fully, totally, completely healed, but you'll be fully functional and strong well within that time. Last but not least---- don't fear the pain. That is, if they giove you the pain pump. NO, not a morphine pump. This is a thing called Narcaine---- basically, a VERY strong novocaine delivered via a very thin tube, dumping directly onto the surgery site for a few days. After that, then you'll probably need the Percs or whatever; But that Narcaine is a LIFESAVER. I didn't have it after my first time, and BOY DID I FUCKING HURT. This last time tho, I was told that Narcaine is now standard, and you'll be amazed just how effective it is. Good Luck, and don't worry about the drumming. Get yourself home safely, and soon. |

Thanks a LOT Boby - i'm hoping some of that helps.
I've been shooting - it sucks, but a lot of the time i'm on crew served weapons that don't involve the shoulder. We shall see on this one....... |

Not yet - was supposed to deploy tommorow, actually - but i'm stuck here -- i did a 50 mile ruck, and along the way got a really bad reaction to some spider bites. Severe Acute contact dermatitis = the result. Yeah. Basically my right (injured) arm from wrist to elbow is bubbling, blistering, and excrutiatingly painful.
SO- here I sit, while my team deploys. I feel like shit. But once i'm recovered, I plan on catching the first flight out. |

I played a full game of baseball with a broken hand just because my team (your Wollaston Nationals) only because I was a trooper and sucked it up because my team only had 9 players.....turns out i had a secondary break....and I missed almost all the rest of the games....and we still lost the game.... I could have avoided surgery and rehab and wearing a cast and missing work unpaid (i have a better job now that lets me go to PT no sweat) ANYHOW, my point is that YOU have to take care of YOURSELF, NOW, so that you can go FULL SPEED later. Get he operation to fix you shoulder sooner rather than later, rehab will go quicker that way. get well soon. |

Speeding around Sheffield in a Corvette and fighting for your country in a shitty war are 2 different things, no? oh, the methods that got them there are clearly in favor of our boy Gato....I have the utmost respect for the dude. Oh and also....I was kidding. But the dude IS missing an arm....that's a pretty big deal. |

I broke my wrist skiing a number of years ago, and had to have screws/plates/pins put in to hold it together. I asked the surgeon "Will I be able to play the drums again?" and he said "Is this like the piano joke?"
Feel better, get back into things SLOWLY, and work hard with your PT when you're ready. You'll be OK. Hang in there. |

Having been through a pretty painful shoulder procedure, all I can do is wish you the speediest recovery, and hope you get good meds.
I'll also parrot the notion that you gotta bust ass on PT so it doesn't come back to you later. |

I actually looked it up to see if he was also drunk, but nothing said he was. He WAS speeding. Not that you deserve you arm to be taken off, but if he was driving drunk, then fuck'im! |

Much respect to Rick Allen - the thing is - this is just such an injury that it's not only fucked the shoulder joint, but some muscles in my back as well, and it just fucking hurts to play - almost unbearably -- shooting is OK, but even that hurts a bit - i'm thinking of switching to lefty, but only if I can shoot expert - I can only qualify with about 35/40 at this point from the left, versus 39/40 on the right - so that ain't good enough yet.
The guitar seems like i'll enjoy it more. |
