Since the 'pinned' threads are many and there is information in several places, I wanted to create a single thread where info about the benefit series can be posted, particularly for the benefit of non-regular Noise Board users. So, in this thread you will find (and/or should post):
1. Up to the minute lineup changes and additions. 2. Links to the venues and contact info for the organizers. 3. Poster art, in both web and printable versions. 4. Offers of and requests for promotional help leading up to the shows. 5. A press release and media contacts (coming shortly). Thank you for your help in keeping all this information clear and in one place. --- Press Release for the Jon Erik Johnson Memorial Concert Series (PDF) Contact information is included in the above document. Interested parties may also PM users MizValentine or ladyeleanor via the Board. This post has been edited by ladyeleanor: Feb 6 2007, 08:07 PM |

Official lineup addition to the February 11th show at the Abbey:
The Steamy Bohemians will be performing a short set of female harmony duo Appalachian traditional music, in the exact style of the Kossoy Sisters, who are acclaimed keepers of that flame. It's fantastically awesome stuff, dark and beautiful and at the core of the soul of American music. My brother is the one that turned me on to the Kossoy Sisters years back (he'd also interviewed them - they grew up in NYC but live in Sommerville now), and their 1956 album "Bowling Green" is in my opinion one of the coolest albums ever recorded. Add to that, my brother and I grew up with our grandmother Virginia living with us, and she was herself a singer/guitar player who grew up in West Virginia and sang all these strange traditional songs for us all the time - the very same living tradition that gave us the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers and Johnny Cash. Jon and I were very lucky to be a part of that living tradition, didn't have to get it from any NPR polite lame cleaned up revisionist idea of what American folk music is. The real deal version is darkly edgy and fascinatingly strange. Steamies as Kossoys on the 11th show. I'm thrilled. |

Information for Members of the Press
Thanks to Board Moderator ladyeleanor, we now have a press release for the events. (I did edit her original release, so if there are any errors or less than stellar turns of phrase, its definitely my fault!) It has been distributed to the local media, but it is also available for download by clicking here: Press Release for the Jon Erik Johnson Memorial Concert Series (PDF) Contact information is included in the above document. Interested parties may also PM users MizValentine or ladyeleanor via the Board. Members of the community are encouraged to distribute the release to any and all media contacts you may have. |

Is anyone going to be videotaping these shows? I'd love to have something my parents could watch, as they won't be able to make the shows in person.

NOT AT ALL to be a killjoy, but every so often, the cops bust for these, and i would hate to see a show (especially one of these) shut down for illegal flyer-ing... inside clubs, stores, whatever, is OK w/owner's consent, but when a club gets fined (or worse) for this, the bands in question are usually not asked back. again, i say this from a good place, seriously. just FYI. |

Lexi, this would be truly wonderful and appreciated. I'm on it! I'm good at flyering, I did it a thousand times when I was booking/promoting a lot. Allston has specific spots that are good and won't get anyone in trouble like what mercyjames was talking about. (mercyjames is right about watching where you flyer. Stick to the "sanctioned" places. Here's a crazy thing - Friday night I saw an older Asian woman on Harvard Ave, with a stack of bright yellow war protest posters, big ones, and wasn't doing the simple "tape" job the rest of us do, AND she wasn't just sticking with the music shops and flyer boards -- she had a fucking bucket of glue. She would slap a great gluey mess on the surface and plaster two, three, four of those suckers. She did light poles. She did signs. She did MAIL BOXES -- the blue, official kind. You can't put a poster on a mail box! That's not merely private property, that's government property. And glue so the cops can't even just yank it down like they usually do.) |
