The Undude – Fall 2006 Noiseboard Mix
1. So Happy - Hooray for Earth (4.43) 2. Assassin – Muse (3.30) 3. Sorry Angel - Franz Ferdinand and Jane Berkin sing Serge Gainsbourg (3.12) 4. Benzin – Rammstein (3.46) 5. Out Here All Night – Damone (3.19) 6. To Hell with Poverty - Gang of Four (3.58) 7. Cash Machine - Hard-Fi (3.42) 8. I Got A Feeling (Just Nineteen) - Eagles of Death Metal (3.30) 9. So Young But So Cold - Kas Product (2.58) 10. A Guitar and a Heart - M83 (4.46) 11. Black Swan - Thom Yorke (4.49) 12. Utopia - Jackson and his Computer Band (5.52) 13. I.F.A. – Phonophani (4.11) 14. tree - Aphex Twin (9.58) 15. Terebellum - Brian Eno and Robert Fripp (9.40) 16. Eno Speaks… (0.37) The Undude – Fall 2006 Noiseboard Mix My last Noiseboard mix CD was on the quiet side so this time around I livened things up a bit. This rather safe mix came together quickly. My appologies go out in advance to those who don’t get it or don’t like it. Get high or something and maybe it will seem better. 1. So Happy - Hooray for Earth (4.43) 2006 Hooray for Earth stand out for me as one of the best Boston bands, evah! If you like this track, more info here. 2. Assassin – Muse (3.30) 2006 Taken from the 2006 CD “Black Holes and Revelations” – a really well paced CD where the track to track sequence of songs unfold delightfully. 3. Sorry Angel - Franz Ferdinand and Jane Birkin sing Serge Gainsbourg (3.12) 2006 The original version of this song is from Serge Ganbourg’s 1986 “Love on the Beat” 1984 release. Franz Ferdinands’ cover is very strong, and Jane Birkin sings, well… she sings like Jane Birkin. A YouTube clip of this rather odd team seems to show an early version of them playing this together. 4. Benzin – Rammstein (3.46) 2006 A nice little song about BENZIN!!!! Rammstein are just so much fun. How can you resist? And I was surprized by the similarities when I put the Rammstein after the Serge Gainsbourg cover. Who would have guessed? 5. Out Here All Night – Damone (3.19) 2006 Lined up besides these other tracks and Damone fits right in. What an amazing production job on this track. While the rest of the CD isn’t as strong, it’s damn solid in a 1976 sort of way. One of the best poprock songs from a Boston band evah! 6. To Hell with Poverty - Gang of Four (3.58) 2005 I love this re-recording. It screams for your attention. Isn’t that how it’s supposed to be? And here’s some vintage Gang of Four YouTube action. 7. Cash Machine - Hard-Fi (3.42) 2005 Thematically, this seeemd like a good next step. And a welcome breather. And more English accents. I’m not such a big fan of the rest of this CD, but this song works for me. 8. I Got A Feeling (Just Nineteen) - Eagles of Death Metal (3.30) 2006 If you like glam-rock and QOTSA, you’ll like this record. It’s just plain rock fun. What more do you need? 9. So Young But So Cold - Kas Product (2.58) 1981 This is the title track on a compilation of different underground French music from 1977-1983, this 1981 recording from Kas Product sounds very current to my ears. Curious to hear more? Check out this YouTube video from 1982. Kas Product on the web: http://kasproduct.com/Home.htm 10. A Guitar and a Heart - M83 (4.46) 2005 From one French synth-rock band to another – but this one 25 years younger: M83. This instrumental makes me think of My Bloody Valentime meets Stereolab. This track is taken from M83's third, and most recent CD. Curious to hear more? Here’s a track from their preceding CD. 11. Black Swan - Thom Yorke (4.49) 2006 Black Swan was the single taken from Thom Yorke’s “The Eraser.” It seemed like the right track to place at this point in the mix. The rest of The Eraser reminds me of a half-baked Bjork album, which is to point out that Bjork CDs seem less patchy. Still, this track is really good. 12. Utopia - Jackson and his Computer Band (5.52) 2005 The lead cut from the Jackson Fourgeaud’s CD “Smash” this track may be the most easily digested with snipets of this and that all smooshed together. The rest of this Frenchman’s cut-up CD is equally ambitious, though less successful for me; though this track works just great. Give it a few spins and it starts to make more sense. Really. 13. I.F.A. – Phonophani (4.11) 1998 And now for something completely different. I love this 1998 track, and so did the record label that re-released it. The rest of the 2006 CD is less successful. 14. tree - Aphex Twin (9.58) 1994 A track taken from 1994’s Selected Ambient Works II, and my favorite track from perhaps my all-time favorite CD. Play this loudly and it is very different experience than playing it quietly. Sex to this music played loud invites bruises. 15. Terebellum - Brian Eno and Robert Fripp (9.40) 2005 The last track from the absolutely brilliant “The Equatorial Stars,” this seemed like the right way to complete the CD. Fripp plays some of the most poignant and emotional guitar of his career on this CD. If you like Evening Star, this updates your collection. 16. Eno Speaks… (0.37) 1979 This track is “Postscript” from Robert Fripp’s 1979 Exposure solo album. Eno sums it all up. |

Not familiar with too much of this stuff which is great.
Eagles of Death Metal--not what I was expecting at all! This is the band Josh Homme plays drums in? Great tune here but was expecting something more along the lines of QOTSA. I'll need to check more of this out. |

This mix hasn't gotten much review so I wanted to check it out. The first time I heard it was not under the best of conditions. It wasn't relaxing circumstances, and my reaction was lukewarm. I did like some tracks right off the bat, some were ok, some I didn't care for.
But then I listened again today and I really enjoyed it! It was quite a contrast to The Undude's last mix, which I liked, but which was consistently mellow. I was glad to hear Hooray for Earth as I had heard a lot about them on the board and I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked the song. Muse I had heard a little of before and I do like them. THis song by them is one that got better with repeated listens; same with Franz and Jane. Benzin -- was great -- funny, but a great riff. I kind of feared some sort of Aryan action accopanies this though. Just kidding. I hope. Who/what the hell is Benzin, do you know? Consistent, solid enjoyment proceeded, >>great guitar on the Gang of Four song, overtones of Tommy Bolin in there, to me at least, and then a couple I liked a lot: Cash Machine and the M83 instrumental. The former very catchy and fun, the second with cool guitar and a great hypnotic rhythm. Now the bad news: I just didn't like the Thom Yorke song and the song Utopia I found annoying with its repeated stop and start thing, but it did get a little better on second listen. Then the most dramatic switch in noise board mix history occurred and it was nice. Just great music to relax and think to. Such a contrast to what came before, musically. Makes you think about what music is "for". I want to check out the Fripp and Eno thing as you mention Fripp's guitar playing. Good job, Undude, really good mix. |

In my intro post, all the tracks have links to Amazon or YouTube and stuff if you're curious know more about something. I'm glad you found some enjoyment from selected tracks. To me it all seems like part of a whole, a continuity of sorts. But if you don't like the Thom Yorke or Jackson and his Computer Band tracks, I guess the links break. Based on mixes I remember from the last trade or that I've heard so far from this trade, click & cut/techno isn't in many people's musical collections. It certainly can be tough going at times, but if you give it a chance, it can grow on you. My own personal experience with Jackson and his Computer Band is it took about 4 listens for me to relax enough. Try not to think in terms of "song." Perhaps it's more like bop-jazz? There's a lot going on. Let it flow - as where one is in the track is less important than the moment you're in now. Anyway, that's a strategy that might help you find a doorway into it. "Benzin" translates to Gasoline. It's a song about being addicted to oil. Unofficial Translation ©2005 Jeremy WilliamsL http://herzeleid.com/en/lyrics/rosenrot/benzin I need time Don't need heroin nor alcohol nor nicotine I don't need help Nor caffeine But I do need dynamite and turpentine I need oil for gasoline [2] Explosive like kerosene With lots of octane and free of lead A fuel like Petrol I don't need a friend Nor cocaine I need neither a doctor nor medicine I don't need a woman, just Vaseline Some nitroglycerine I need money for gasoline Explosive like kerosene With lots of octane and free of lead A fuel like Petrol Give me petrol It flows through my veins It sleeps in my tears It leaks from my ears Heart and kidneys are motors Petrol If you want to part with something then you have to incinerate it If you never want to see it again let it swim in petrol Petrol I need petrol Petrol Give me petrol [1] Petrol is the British term for gasoline; gasoline is the American term for Petrol. [2] "Gasolin" is not a German word, but simply the English word, made German. However, there was a German chain of gas stations called "Gasolin" that only existed for about 20 years. I commute home from 495 down the turnpike generally around 8.30 pm. So, I think of this as a driving mix. At night. Speeding along. Loud. |

That was great that you put in those links to find out more about these artists, thanks.
I will give the Jackson song more spins and see what happens. I saw that and the Yorke track as a transition to the last few songs and it that respect I thought it worked. I just didn't like the Yorke song but what do I know? - it's just some random guy's aesthetic reaction, and in the end I enjoyed 14 out of 16 and that of course is a great average. Thanks for the Benzin translation -- that makes the song stronger for me. |

I loved loved loved this mix......until the last few songs, where you lost me. Maybe it's because I was on the highway while listening to it, the first 11 or 12 songs were just kick ass driving music, and the flow was really great. Then, like you said, there's a pretty abrupt U-turn. I think I'll try listening to those last few songs on their own, and not while driving.

I drive DOWN 495 from Lowell to Hopkinton what part of the highway works best for this mix? If I hear a report from the Undude that a particular part of the highway is just some sort of supernova of concentrated goodness specifically for his mix, I'll go to it. I don't live that far away. Still researching MA roads for what works best for mine but I'm pretty sure it is route 2. And I think East or West work equally well. I do know this: the less traffic the better. |

Maybe it's my age, but this mix gave me the strange sensation that I had a teenage boy living in the house.
I could picture myself doing his laundry and screaming up the stairs, "Turn that racket down!" That's not necessarily a bad thing, just not MY thing. |

Should have said mostly not My thing. I think I was just waiting on a change up, which eventually comes but not 'til the end & then it's Fripp & Eno. (Boy stuff) Don't get me wrong, There is stuff I absolutely adored on this mix. Kas product, for one. (and We even had a few of the same artists, Would have been more but I decided against the Rammstein) Good stuff, now, turn that racket down!!! |

OK I read that you should get high before listening so I took this to Amsterdam and did just that
I didn't have it up quite loud enough at first and then I had it up so loud that the hotel room neighbors were pounding on the wall but I did NOT turn it down until after Black Swan which was my favorite song on the mix! |

Did the volume increased as your consciousness shifted? |
