is this all group 1?
in any case, group 1 (rec'd today) looks great & looking fwd to it, many thx to all i seriously agonized over this one, maybe coulda been better... every comp should have at least one good instrumental, and this doesn't, really. but to these ears, it just worked. hope you agree / enjoy (1) messer chups intro monstro crescendo became obsessed w/them 'til i realized it was all the same song, but it's a good fuckin' song. (2) tiny tim strawberry tea hung out w/the guy, one of my fave people / artists, and it was NO ACT. (3) the doors horse latitudes figured their least "musical" piece would be appropriate here (4) diablito the jungle from one o' those "las vegas grind" type comps, surprised this guy didn't do more, an all-time fave (5) mummies red cobra #9 another all-time fave, live video i have is astounding, they could do no wrong, and i hear they're assholes (6) chandra subway she was like, 10 or 12 yrs old when she sang this (7) evolution control committee by the time i get to arizona assuming you know the 2 bands this is spliced from, sadly Eerie Materials (label) site seems to be gone (8) kd lang miss chatelaine gorgeous, end of story (9) gino vanelli black cars hairy-boy's stab at the 80's, w/fantastic results (10) masters of reality gettin high shoulda been much, much bigger (11) tom vek a little word in your ear ditto (12) mazzy star blue flower ditto, although the alleged junk probably didn't help, beautiful song (13) willie nelson - peach pickin' time in georgia from a jimmy rodgers tribute comp, which bono unfortunately had a hand in (14) minutemen the product 'nother all time fave, saw 'em do this @ channel sans horn & fell right in love (15) lou rawls natural man sheepish kudos to the david lee roth radio show for the heads-up on this (16) ernie kovacks nairobi trio get the dvds, fuck the customer reviews, trust me (17) the eames era could be anything from baton rouge, most crushworthy gal singer EVAH (18) loretta lynn portland, oregon from that jack white-produced LP (19) didjits stingray one of the great live acts of all time (20) mighty mouse theme because i love andy kaufman and the song (21) the selecter on my radio weirdest chorus in a ska song ever & otherwise still a doozie (22) rufus youve got the love get out the lotion, kids (23) the legendary stardust cowboy paralyzed indeed (24) yoko ono sisters, o sisters hoping the yoko-haters will like this one (25) utopia take it home and there ya go |

(5) mummies red cobra #9 another all-time fave, live video i have is astounding, they could do no wrong, and i hear they're assholes i've only met russel, but he was the nicest dude ever. trent comes off a bit standoffish in interviews, but that was sorta their schtick. but yeah, the live stuff is awesome. i'd really like to see the full show in france that the video i have was taken from. still haven't seen any supercharger live footage. |

I had no idea what to expect from this CD, but you had me at Messer Chups. My first reaction was I have got to find out more about this band, then I read your "same song" comment, but I'll probably still check them out.
Eclectic doesn't even begin to describe this mix, but it all works together. Highlights for me are the tracks by Diablito, the Mummies, the Selecter, and Didjits. Nice to see the k.d. lang tune in there as well. Her voice just makes me weep. And that Loretta Lynn song is both beautiful and a little creepy. The Minuteman track reminded me that I have to re-buy Double Nickels on the Dime. Fun and educational. |

Oh, Jack White!! Thank you! no, thank YOU, seriously... almost put a different kd country song in place of willie, and lou reed's "how do you think it feels" (from Berlin) in place of the the other, but it was too downer or something... pretty sure that's the only good song gino ever puked up... and hey, YOKO and TINY!!?? C'MON!! still waitin' for more love on this one (sigh)... frankD, don't lose any sleep lookin' for that gino, trust me... |

The second listen was better than the first, which was good. This Coughlin guy puts together great mixes. I fuckin' love 'em by and large. Some of the segues are absolutely brilliant. Possibly my favorite one ever, on any mix, comes here with songs 19 and 20. Struck me as completely fitting and hilarious. Not sure if it was meant the way I took it.
I think we first started making the mixes around Halloween. Too bad we didn't all get them then cause that atmosphere is here. I was basically frightened at the beginning of this mix. The first 6 songs are a great run in this vein. I have to say: the Tiny Tim song blew me away. Had NO idea he was associated with anything like this. Beautiful song. Surreal almost, befitting the subject matter it seems. Does a lot of his early stuff have full instrumentation like this? The diablito song got under my skin. Not sure I want to go into a jungle anytime soon. I could go on and on with honorifics but that would get boring. A couple more notes though. 1. Coincidence: I almost put on 4 different Masters of Reality songs but ended up not, somehow. 2. Had no idea Gino Vanelli wrote a good song, or something like this -- so, thanks. 3. Minutemen song's vocals are outstanding! 4. I read a book this summer called "Quitting The Nairobi Trio" - a memoir by Jim Knipfel about being in a sanatarium, good book, and he brings up this very song from the Ernie Kovacks show and I believe he said that monkeys play drums on it, or something like that (?). Awesome to hear the song here. 5. The songs by The Eames Era and Loretta Lynn are fantastic. What do you know about the former, Joe? 6. I have that Utopia album, their homage to The Beatles and I guess it goes without saying that the inspiration for this song is "Day Tripper", right? 7. What kd lang song did you almost pick? This one's good though. Thanks. |

I sort of shy away from the "look how varied and eclectic my mix is" - but I liked this - a lot.
I cam also faithfully say I don't own a single song by anyone on this mix other than the Minutemen. I would have never intentionally purchase music from most artists on this mix before I listened to it. Now I may seek some of the weirder shit out. Like Chandra. That being said there is some crazy shit I was glad I was introduced to. What is that Evolution Control Committe about? That is defintely a Public Enemy song and those are defintely Chick D's vocals. |

QUOTE Some of the segues are absolutely brilliant. Possibly my favorite one ever, on any mix, comes here with songs 19 and 20. Struck me as completely fitting and hilarious. Not sure if it was meant the way I took it. many thanks --- segues are at LEAST as important as the songs --- i thnk a disc's worth of crap can be made interesting if you segue it right --- as to that one, i'm not telling. QUOTE I was basically frightened at the beginning of this mix. thanks, i think! QUOTE I have to say: the Tiny Tim song blew me away. Had NO idea he was associated with anything like this. Beautiful song. Surreal almost, befitting the subject matter it seems. Does a lot of his early stuff have full instrumentation like this? first two studio albums are like this, but often much more so... some of it is just heartbreaking, tiny was an underrated genius, and most people never got to hear his insane grasp on things --- check these out: live at royal albert hall 10-30-68 no longer available from here, but can stilll be had / samples still up --- one of the greatest things i've ever heard --- mick jagger is said to have stated at the time that tiny was the only person he'd pay to see, members of beatles & stones reportedly in the audience for this show... also: reprise antholopgy worth it for said first two LPs --- 2nd never on disc 'til now, and that one alone worth it for the closing medley, which includes a version of the nelson eddy / (i think) rise stevens duet "my hero" from the movie "chocolate soldier" which is fuckin' staggering (unfortunately snipped from the online samples)... tiny sings both parts, of course, as he does in a hilarious take of "i got you, babe," versions of shich appear on both these discs... i could talk tiny all day... third LP on the anthology is mostly throwaway children's music, but there's some rare fucked stuff as well... QUOTE I could go on and on with honorifics but that would get boring. A couple more notes though. but that's the best part! QUOTE 2. Had no idea Gino Vanelli wrote a good song, or something like this doubt very much he wrote it, trying to find out, but he IS putting out a reissue / remix as we speak (yes, this far along) QUOTE 4. I read a book this summer called "Quitting The Nairobi Trio" - a memoir by Jim Knipfel about being in a sanatarium, good book, and he brings up this very song from the Ernie Kovacks show and I believe he said that monkeys play drums on it, or something like that (?). Awesome to hear the song here. long-running skit on the show, here's an old clip ![]() QUOTE 5. The songs by The Eames Era and Loretta Lynn are fantastic. What do you know about the former, Joe? eames have a myspace too, booked 'em @ midway once, a band of doug fuller's opened, he'll vouch for how cool they were QUOTE 6. I have that Utopia album, their homage to The Beatles and I guess it goes without saying that the inspiration for this song is "Day Tripper", right? didn't know that! --- i just heard the song on 'MBR once & tracked it down... QUOTE 7. What kd lang song did you almost pick? "big big love," much earlier peppy country thing, but this one has better changes & stuff... |

Joe -- thanks for all the answers and leads to my queries. I will without question look into Tiny Tim more.
Many thanks for the link to the Ernie Kovacs video!! Check it out, folks. That part of the Jim Knipfel book was very meaningful to me. You may want to read the book, honestly. The cover of the one I read -- it was an uncorrected proof so I don't know if the cover is different from the one eventually published -- was a picture of the conductor monkey smoking the cigar. I have a live kd bootleg of excellent quality from the "Ingenue" period that has the songs you mentioned and many more that I'd like to send you as it's real good. One thing I forgot to mention originally-- the Legndary Stardust Cowboy song was a riot and I think I "got" it. Fantastic. I can't imagine what the rest of his stuff is like... Oh yeah, that Utopia album "Outstanding In Their Field" -- shows them out standing in a field, or wait, that's a subtitle. I believe it's called "Deface the Music". anyway, Todd has said that it is an homage to the Beatles and if I'm not mistaken each song is a direct ode to a specific Beatles song. I have the vinyl and can record it for you if you'd like. Let me know. |

Pretty eclectic mix. Can't say I loved everything (I coulda done without the Tiny Tim song) but it really worked well. I am somewhat torn with the Evolution Control Committee. I love the idea and for the most
part it works but I'm not sure about the choice of music. I mean I get it but part of the allure of Public Enemy is the noise. That said some of the standout were: Mummies, KD Lang, Gino Vanelli (why does that sound so familiar?) Mazzy Star, Willie Nelson, Minutemen and Loretta Lynn. Fun stuff. |

This thread has been educational just reading. One anecdote about The Legendary Stardust Cowboy; he used to show up at his local drive in movie theater and stand on the hood of his car ( a station wagon, I believe) and scream and yell and whoop it up and entertain people playing his trumpet and guitar before the movies would start. Damn, I wish I'd seen some of that. |

I didn't participate. Tell you what, though...What I'd really dig is a "Best Of" Tiny Tim disc that you put together. That would rule. I don't want you to go to any trouble, but if you had something like that, I'd be psyched. I do have a recent comp. that I made to trade with ya. Songs In The Key Of Z is fantastic.
