If you asked me say two months ago I might have recalled his name but that is about it. Anyone else feel the same way about this guy?

He was really good in that Dylan movie, but I can't say I was ever that impressed with the guy before.

The media shitstorm was to be expected. He was, after all, one who existed whollly in "media" in one form or another for most people. The hilarity of it all is to hear/read people lamenting his untimely death on a personal level, as though he had been booked to have dinner with them this week, then Christen their first-born afterwards.

He meant a whole lot of nothing to a whole lot of idiotic movie fans.

He died.

Oopsy !!

I can understand getting upset over celebrity deaths, however, I am being honest when I say that this guy didn't register. I knew the name but that was about it. Sam Kinison never got this outpouring.

i cried like a bastard when lennon died
still do, sometimes
not for the loss so much as the randomness / method
i guess i'm a big pussy (don't mean you, charl)
i've had friends who were absolute nobodies kill themselves
i guess i just don't get the joke, and i have a pretty good sense of humor.
sure, some people who claim to care are full of it... not all of them, though.

I am sad that someone so young and full of promise died but I suppose I just don't understand the "24/7 outpouring of grief" along with the Cable outlets attempt to convince the public that he was a very, very, very important person.

"Up and coming actor (fill in the name) died mysteriously in his apartment"

^^^

That byline used to work quite well in the past and then the news outlets moved on to more important matters.

I never go to movies, although a few months ago I saw the Strummer movie at Coolidge Corner, so I literally had no idea who this guy was. To me, it's the same as when Anna Nicole died. I didn't know her either, and frankly, I don't give a shit about either one of them. Although, as a parent, I feel badly that they left children without a parent.

Anna Nichole was more well known though. Granted it was for being a train-wreck but her name at least registered immediately upon hearing of her death.

I suppose I give a fuck in that I think it is sad.....then again it I feel the same way when I read about any other random death in the City Region of the Globe. Sad to say, but he really wasn't big enough celebrity for me to be interested/shocked about his death. I don't know why this is. I wish I knew. I don't think it is apathy or uncaring. Maybe for one to care about "celebrity" death, one needs to be first somehow "invested" or "on board" with the overall sense of being a celebrity.

charl, you're totally losing me, are you saying you didn't know he was a star, or that he's not a big enough star that people should care about, or... ?
i don't know what difference any of it makes either way or why this is a topic at all.
some will care, some won't.

The second day of this shit I was thinking,"This guy is still dead? I thought he was dead yesterday. There must not have been a pantyless celebrity exiting a limo in the last 24 hours..."

Stop the presses! Forget Heath Ledger - the real bombshell here is you're a parent? Oh shit.

Back to the topic, however: I overheard some Access Hollywood or some such coverage about Heath Ledger. They were suggesting that his portrayal as the fucking Joker was so dark that he couldn't shake it and that contributed to the insomnia he was trying to treat with drugs. Do they really think anyone's naive enough to buy that? Please. He was rich, famous, and on drugs. Typical - no need to dress it up.

I guess I don't have a point really. I guess I simply don't feel Ledger's relatively low level of celebrity (or "developing level) is worthy of this outpouring of grief that is on par with some truly important celebrities (like Lennon).

It is rather puzzling, really must've been a slow news day. What with the boring old Iraq war, the presidential race, stock market, etc. Boy, nothing really happening, let's follow some story about a b-list actor.
