I'm thinking about getting a scooter this spring for commuting to work. It's going to be the under 50cc variety so I don't have to register or insure it, and so I can park it on the sidewalks in downtown Boston.

Which ones do you scooter types like? Which ones should I steer clear of? Which ones have easily removable restrictor plates and other mods to get a little more zip?

What the what?!?!
Your doing what?
What about an old Vespa...then lying to the registry about the size?
I had 2 250's that I ran around on just moped stickers.
50 cc's...250 cc's...that's only "2" right?
What's 2?

i like the piaggio vespa lx50 thats out right now - never ridden one, but they arent that bad looking and i am a loyal piaggio man - plus they have a herb chambers brick-and-mortar dealership in allston

honda is a good company - metropolitan is the 50cc model

yamaha is almost as good - vino is the 50 cc model

steer clear of the chinese bikes that have chrome and say TURBO on the side!!!

dont buy a scooter at COSTCO or SAMS CLUB - i heard they sell them there now

On the Boston craigslist someone is selling a Yamaha Zuma scooter for cheap. It needs some TLC and plastic stuff, but you can fab up something or just use duct tape, and insure no one tries to steal it. Personally I'd try to get an old Honda or Yamaha rather than one of the new Chinese or Korean cheapies.

Yeah, I've been looking at different models on the internets from the Japanese companies and at Javaspeed. Is the Vespa worth the premium price or are you just paying for the logo?

i have the LX50... great ride.. but thinking back, i kinda wish i had gone for the 150... just ain't enough kick for me.. especially with someone ridin the bitch seat..

good thing about 50CC's and less, you don't need top have a motorcycle license.

but just for gettin around the city, it works..

and ya just can't beat $5 bucks a week on gas.....

Hmmm. Zuma is a two-stroke. I was leaning towards 4-stroke for cleaner emissions and because it's technology I'm familiar with.

I've got the motorcycle. This would strictly be a downtown commuter.

What's the matter with a bicycle? They're just as slow and uncool, and you could get some exercise.

It gets too sweaty in the summer and I've spent a long time nurturing this beer gut. I don't want to ruin it.

i am in love with vespas, and have had the pleasure of riding a friend's lx50.

if money weren't a factor, i would probably get a vespa. but seems like for half the price, the honda metro would be the way to go. i mean, since it is a good company and makes solid stuff. plus they are cooler looking than some of the other competitors.

would it also be cheaper to fix? i'm not a mechanic, but even if i were, would honda parts be cheaper or does that not really come into play in the scooter world?

I think the problem is that scooters are already too fabbed up.

With a 50cc scooter, it'll take you about an hour to get to work! Might as well take the T at that point.

i love the vespas, but overall, it seems like the honda metro is the best bang for the buck. for 50 cc's anyway.
