Frankly, I don't find this funny at all. My grandfather died while reporting the news. He was hit by a runaway roach coach during the noon lunch report. Tragic. He was only 6 years old when it happened.

I'd like to know what was going on off-camera. Some 20 years ago I did radio news and my colleagues would do all sorts of sick stuff to try to get another to lose it on the air. The more serious the story the more tasteless the attempts would be to get someone to crack on the air. I remember one instance where the reporter was reading a story about a stabbing, when someone in the other studio on the other side of the glass started making faces, and stabbing motions with his hand. Myself I had had, water poured over my head while in the middle of a 20 minute newscast another time someone put a belt around my neck and kept trying to pull me away from the microphone. ...and no this wasn't a college station, this was at the time a top rated news/talk outlet.....

apparently there was a weatherman in NY in the 70's named Tex Antoine who excercised this tremendous lack of good judgement:

"On November 24, 1976, his weather spot came up just after a report of a violent rape of a five year old girl. Tex thereupon quipped: "With rape so predominant in the news lately, it is well to remember the words of Confucius: 'If rape is inevitable, lie back and enjoy it.'" Roger Grimsby led the 11 p.m. newscast that night with the official apology from WABC. His joke got Tex Antoine suspended, then fired. Antoine closed out his career with a brief stint as weatherman for WNEW-TV in 1977."
