so light some works up!
except for the whole communism/pending government crackdowns it must be pretty cool to buy any kind of fireworks you want and just light them off where ever you want. |

why are u in shanghai? practice my putonghua [mandarin] top 10 things about china: * drivers don't give a shit about pedestrians. motor scooters care even less. sometimes people drive their cars on the sidewalk if it gets them around an obstacle. * people honk constantly...cars scooters bikes.....the honk says 'get the F out of my way'. * i actually saw a grown man drop his drawers and have the runs on the sidewalk this morning.... i shit you not. bizarre. people walking by and everything. * everyone spits constantly...lungies....it is like 1/2 the country is congested * last night for the 1st time in 30 yrs i was walking past someone and he said "hashish?". i had to stop and talk to him. he didn't look chinese. i asked if he was police, he said no. i said how much? 500 yuan for 10 grams...about $80. i hv no idea how much 10 grams is. i think i bought 1 gram pieces way back when but can't remember. it was 3 doors down from my hostel so i asked a hostel worker about the guys 3 doors down. she wrinkled her face, frown, said "They not chinese, from the west". So they are from the Muslim west part of China. 2 Russians at the hostel laughed when i told them about it. They said that man was trying to cheat me. It is not a crime in China to cheat someone, even buy selling them fake hashish....LOL. * I have met a lot of nice chinese people but the majority are scammers, liars and cheaters so unfortunately I now do not believe anything i chinese person says to me. * men urinate anywhere. every block of Shanghai has a wall that looks like the cover of Who's Next. * FACT - every Chinese child is gorgeous. I have yet to see an ugly or even plain one. * I never understood why old chinese ladies on the MBTA used to shove and squeeze in the trains. It seemed rude. EVERYONE in Shanghai does that. When the train pulls into the staion it is like a rugby scrum with the people getting off and on. I just stand back and watch it. |

I was in negotiations w/ the locals when they found out that you had done a cover of Gang Of Four's 'Anthrax'. Unfortuantely you will never be allowed to enter the Middle Kingdom. So sorry. |

gotten used to china blocking web sites. Cant access youtube.com and anything with blog or blogspot in the URL....but they also block http://www.mideastclub.com/. They don't block TTs or the Plough/ The Middle East must be full of anti-reactionary types. No wonder I avoid that place. Also, the shitty service......

fuck china! their older generation hates us, and their younger generation will to when rampant capitolism ruins their environment actually what i hv learned is that evryone idolizes the west, and especially the US. They all want to lv china. A lot of people hv become rich here but most... 1 billion or more, even a lot of college grads....really struggle to get by. The old adage "US streets are paved with gold" is still believed. 1 queer cultural note. When I 1st got here a month ago I noticed that 80-90% of the advertising, billboards etc, had western models, not chinese. It reminded me of that old social experiment where an african american girl child has 2 dolls put in front of here, ablack and a white one. The child picks the white one because it is prettier. The Chinese seem to feel the same way about westerners. very sad i think. I now no longer notice the western models in ads. I hv become used to it. |

One last note. After 4+ weeks in China I now know for a certainty that China will never rule the world, or dominate anything. They have acquired a lot of $ because they are willing to do slave factory labor for $s a day.
But they will never lead because of one thing......the concept of honesty does not exist here. Lieing does not carry a social stigma, and lieing to cheat someone is acceptable if you can get away with it. It is the fault of the person who was cheated because they were stupid enough to be cheated. Seriously. This is not just some people, but all. It is the cultural norm. This is one phked up place. but i like it........... |

i have gotten to know the staff of the Phoenix Hostel in Shanghai after staying here more than 4 weeks, and there is one girl around 22 who works the rooftop lounge and has a very nice singing voice, and constantly humms/sings while she works. A very sweet kid. So I stick the Monterrey Pop DVD in my computer and show her Janis Ball and Chain. It doesn't take 30 seconds before she says "I no like. She sings like man." LOL....well yes she does. Cultural differences. What I consider one of the greatest filmed rock performaces is casually tossed in the gutter as ugly.....hahahahaha

In the latest news:
BEIJING – Jittery Chinese authorities wary of any domestic dissent staged a concerted show of force Sunday to squelch a mysterious online call for a "Jasmine Revolution" apparently modeled after pro-democracy demonstrations sweeping the Middle East. Authorities detained activists, increased the number of police on the streets, disconnected some mobile phone text messaging services and censored Internet postings about the call to stage protests at 2 p.m. in Beijing, Shanghai and 11 other major cities. |

How was the BBQ dog? Not much different from the BBQ cat....quite tasty. Seriously, all the cats and dogs I saw 'did not look confident'. They were always skulking in the corners, looking over their shoulders. But i'ze back now, and Dylan is going. http://www.rfa.org/english/news/china/lege...2011135816.html |
