Maybe it's got something to do with the age at which their parents got divorced, I don't know. There does tend to be a broad range of severity of the personality flaws people who grew up in brokwn homes suffer from. But one thing's for sure. I have never met a person whose parents were divorced while they were a child that didn't have something wrong with them; Ranging from being a little "off" to completely batshit nuts. Discuss.... |

Yep. It varies in severity, but yep.

As an adult child of divorced parents, I concur.

My parents are divorced, but they seperated when I was 20, and I was always a little off anyway, so I don't think it affected me too much.

You may be onto something. You do hear a lot of anecdotal stories about how "my parents were divorced so I can't commit because I'm afraid of breaking up" from adult children of divorce.
For the record, strangely, there has been only one divorce in my entire extended family. My parents are still married. (They don't really like each other much these days now that they're both retired and my father has utterly given up on his health, but that's another story. How about adult children of irrational fathers?) |

My prediction for this thread:
Children of divorced parents disagree. Children of parents still together agree. Danny Vermin decides the winner |

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the kid down the street is gonna be a little 'off' when he grows up. His dear old dad just got arrested for having 10,000 pics and vids of child porn, like really hardcore stuff.
And my guess is that counseling won't save dad's marriage. |

It's not the divorce that fucks a kid up. It's all the shit that happens before the divorce. So it's really a situation of "kids of parents that don't get along" than "kids of divorced parents".
I know a guy who divorced his wife, but they both took great efforts to not let if affect the kids. The kids turned out great. |

Don't know about divorced, the most messed up people I have met have had bad childhoods, period, whether parents were together or not.
The most screwed up folks ever are the kids of psychiatrists/psychologists. |

My parents were divorced when I was a baby. People seem to think that's very sad but I would think having to deal with something like that as a child or a teenager would be worlds worse.

Divorced or Married: They fuck you up, your mum and dad They may not mean to, but they do. They fill you with the faults they had And add some extra, just for you. But they were fucked up in their turn By fools in old-style hats and coats, Who half the time were soppy-stern And half at one another's throats. Man hands on misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. Get out as early as you can, And don't have any kids yourself. Phillip Larkin - This Be The Verse (Too good not to post in full.) |

Everybody is a little 'off' this^^^, I know people who's parents are still together that are totally fucked in the head, likewise, I know people from divorced parents that are more sane and normal than most. Like SMCD said, fucked parents raise fucked kids, divorce isn't the overriding factor. |
