mark taylor, aka boss hoss, is one of the world's formost authorities on 60's garage music. he, along with alec paleo, have helped unearth all kinds of great music that has been issued on the frantic label as well as ACE RECORDS.

the great thing about mark is that he SHARES stuff. he finds stuff NO ONE else has, and shares it with people on places like (the departed) GARAGE PUNK FORUMS.

he made available a 2 cd set of all garage acetates. you can find it on soulseek. this VOODOO song was off of that compilation. the compilation has something like 50 60's garage acetates that have never been released officially in any form.

mark also is in the process of going thru the vaults (which he purchased a few years ago) of ny recording studio, FINE RECORDS.

he also made available a crazy cool compilation of gospel recordings from FINE.

supposedly, he is working with norton records on issuing a cd/lp of some of these (garage) discoveries.

norton is also planning a 4 disc set of garage acetates and its my guess that some of the mark taylor acetates will appear on this series.

only on song # 10 but I wanted to thank kogar for this. Quite, QUITE entertaining, and it seems like a good amount of work to have done. Really creative matching of the songs with the trailers. The movie trailers thus far -- it's kind of hard to believe they're real, though of course they are, and the tunes, which deserve multiple hearings, are good and interesting to me in a music history sense.I'd be curious to know the years these songs were recorded if you wouldn't mind going thru that hassle, kogar. You could just list the years -- no need to write the song titles down again. If you don't feel like it, no problem. But thanks again regardless. I may want to track down some of the movies. Let me ask you -- how many of these movies have you seen? Any recommendations, if you have seen some?

i would guess that most of the songs on my comp are from the late 50's-60's. most of the instrumental tracks are probably from the early 60's (before the british invasion). the voodoo garage track by the unknown band is probaby 66 or 67.

the chase is on from harley hatcher is from 69ish...teenage war chant is from 62 i think...

as for the movies, i'm not sure if this is your first introduction to these type of movies? basically, the thing with exploitation movies (or grindhouse movies, or whatever the hip lingo is these days) is that the trailers (9 times out of 10) are BETTER than the actual movies. the producers would try ANYTHING to get people to see these movies. the great thing about them is that most of them (to me) are worth seeing because of the "time stamp" in which they were made. these were movies actually playing theaters all over the usa! movies aren't made like this anymore, and if they are, they go straight to video...all these movies actually played theaters and drive-ins!

i've seen a few of the flicks from this comp; here's a run down...

i'm not really gonna talk about DAWN OF THE DEAD, as that's probably the most well known movie trailer on the cd...

FASTER PUSSYCAT, KILL KILL being the 2nd most popular...this is a great movie by russ meyer that should be pretty easy to find nowadays. featuring strippers on a rampage...a classic of its kind.

SATANS SADISTS is an al admson shit fest starring russ tamblyn...its basically a bikers on a rampage movie...

lets see, SQUIRM is your basic "worms on a rampage" movie. i saw this flick as a kid and totally loved it. millions of worms overtake a farmhouse. i have no idea how they filmed this...

SHIVERS was one of david cronenburg's early movies. whatever distribution company put it on a double bill with night of the living dead knew what they were doing. SHIVERS is about an apartment building that is locked down, so no one can get out, while a bizarre sex virus spreads and makes people into sex crazed "zombies"!

i've also seen TEENAGE GANG DEBS. its a great JD movie from the 60's that was shot in nyc using many non-actors. its a great time capsule of the early 60's where people still looked like "greasers"...knife fights, cat fights, dance parties, etc etc, its got it all!

Thanks, kogar, you answered all my questions. The music, then, is from a bit earlier than I would have guessed. I have just recently developed an interest in these kinds of movies. For me too, a big part of their appeal is as you aptly called it, "the time stamp" -- getting a glimpse of the time in which they were made, an aspect of the culture. I have to agree that movies like this aren't made anymore -- they may be copied or paid homage to, or spoofed - but as you said, at the time they were done largely, I think, in earnest. I have, but have not yet watched, a few of the ones from your comp: "Satan's Sadists", "Ghetto Freaks", 'Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill", but the great majority I have not heard of. I did just watch a JD flick called "Jacktown" from, I think 1962. I got it because I wanted to see what became of child actor Patty MCormack after she did "The Bad Seed" 7 years earlier. Jacktown was entertaining.
The voices in the trailers are great! I will look into seeing some of the others, "Teenage Gang Debs" being one of them. Thanks for the history lesson.

Also, the song "Jungle Bunny" -- talk about 'psychotronic'! I can't wrap my head around it yet.

i urge everyone to download something called WAVEPAD. its what i used to make the cd. its free software and pretty easy to use. you can edit, splice, etc...

it also allows you to record anything that comes out of your speakers, thus allowing you to record internet radio shows, etc etc.

if you read the break down in my first post, it gives you an idea....i think only one or 2 tracks would be available on itunes...ichi ban #1, and the link wray tune....

everything else came from either the original 45, an acetate/mp3, and or a vinyl only comp from france called TABU (2 songs)...i tried to make it so that this would be the only way to hear most of the tracks....

I popped this on for the first time today on the way to work. I'm so happy! This a great compilation, perhaps the best I've received from the swaps I've participated in. The marriage of music and movie-trailers is entirely entertaining. It made me think how rock and roll really was rebellion music for teenagers.

I'm only half-way through, so there's more goodness for me to experience on the way home, assuming I'm not ensnared by an oozing swarm of slithering zombie she-devils. THANK YOU!
