Seems like its heyday has come and gone. I would say that the peak years were 1997 or so. City of Presidents Bluesfest, the Yardrock, the Blue Note. Have the bloozers moved further south (Marshfield?). Are they in the retirement home?

I don't know.. with Salem (and sometimes Gloucester) being the exception, it seems that every street fest and live music bar on the North Shore books dad blooze.. the Concerts at Red Rock Park are a prime example..
I think they all moved up here. It drives me nuts. |

Thursdays at like 8pm at the Irish Pub in North Quincy there's a blues band. Dunno if it's a jam or a band, but it's enough to make me not go there on Thursdays.

That's interesting...I didn't know the Dad Bloozers ventured to that part of Quincy. It seemed to me they stayed focused on the area south of the Center. |

There are still bad cover bands and Jimmy-Buffet wanna-be's at the Lobster Shanty/Artist's Row but I think Fats Hammond is the only real blooze act and he's actually liked by the hipster set up there..he's not quite your average dad-blooze. Dodge St., Front St Coffee House and Gulu-Gulu are thriving with original acts of all sorts |

I think it is now some Mexican bar or something like that. |

The 00's have ushered in some interesting migrations. Dad Blooze is no longer just a shipyard thing. People are moving all over. For example, I heard that down in New Jersey, Tommy is no longer working on the docks, but at a Costco, and Gina is no longer at the diner all day - she's a stay-at-home mom with a successful online business. She still cries in the night, though. The blues guys at the Irish Pub are actually really good. I just don't like it because they're much too loud for such a small place. I guess if you're into that you can just sit up the front, or if you want to play with them then there you go. |

Dodge St., Front St Coffee House and Gulu-Gulu are thriving with original acts of all sorts I once overheard the lead organist dude from Fats Hammond (the douchey 50 something with the bald guy ponytail on the back of his head) say to someone who'd asked to jam with him "Well, are you a motherfucker on your instrument? I only jam with people who are motherfuckers on their instruments!". The two people I was at Dodge Street with and I laughed out loud loudly enough for him to hear us, and he turned fucking beet red and stomped off back to his organ to get ready for Fats' next set. Oh, and... There really is(was?) no bigger crowd of pretentious, pretending to "get it" asswipes than the hipster/hippy crowd that used to (still does?) congregate at Dodge to see Fats. What a shit show. This post has been edited by Flipper: Aug 4 2009, 07:05 PM |

Funnily enough, I know the two dudes "intro-ing" this video, and they are both quite decent people despite their Fats Hammond fandom, and the just plain silly (Trent's) sunglasses. |

After the last shooting, that place is closed for good. The Guati place on the other corner of that block is also closed. Salem is trying to clean up the Point by turning everything into $700,000.00 condos. I was shocked to see how crowded T.I.T.S. was, and Gulu was closing early because it was slow. Murphy's is supposedly going to book live bands, but because it is such a large room, and Peter is shelling out a lot of cash to renovate the joint I think it will be mostly cover bands, jam bands, and DJ's. |

The Tavern On The Square is just awful. I don't even want to walk on the same side of the street as it. Gulu may be a little slow on a Tuesday but not slow overall. Without Gulu, we'd be stuck with nothing but dad blooze and bad-awful cover bands and top 40 dj's..ok, except for the odd goth night at a Thai restaurant. Besides, Gulu has a much better selection of drinks without its full license than most bars with full alcohol licenses do. |

Jesus Christ, the way those guys play gives me the blues. What a wreck. Yeah, I like a Hammond organ but more as a compliment to music not as something that it played continuously as the main feature. I think that organ sound would drive me nuts after a while. |

Now see, I absolutely love Hammond organs....and even the "electric pianos" like the Farfisa, Wurlitzer & such...but it's like these guys have never ever seen a Jimmy McGriff, Bill Doggett or Jimmy Smith record, let alone actually put a needle to it. This is all kind of like, "When Booker T goes bad..." |

This is all kind of like, "When Booker T goes bad..." That's true....Jimmy Smith is brilliant and I could listen to his records beginning to end. Maybe it was just the way these Salem guys played/approached it. |
