Go direct to the two other boxes. Different flavor (it's not Booker T playing on everything) but consistently high quality stuff. It's the friggin' motherlode.

9 Disc box is the '59-'68. I have all 3 and that's the best one but they're all worth getting. Hey Duncan

Sometimes it gets a little 'doo-woppie' and the slower songs drag for my taste, but damn! Some of the greatest and most influential music ever...you can literally hear riffs from later rock songs. The other two sets are nice but you hear that more modern (lots of violins) sound seeping in. Its cool to hear the progression from 'soul/r&b' to either 'modern soul' or 'funk'. |

So much amazing stuff; it's pretty staggering. I'll buy any record that Al Jackson plays on, no questions asked.
Anyone interested should really check out the Stax Museum in Memphis. It'll bring a tear to your eye. |

I love the oddball singles that snuck on to the boxes. The first box has two songs by some DJ whom Stax owed a favor to; and they're probably the most memorable thing on the whole set-- because they're so sublimely, hilariously awful.

You mean Sunday Jealous by Nick Charles? Because Cool Strut by Bernie Hayes was also a DJ record. I like that Nick Charles song honesty but I don't think it's nearly the most memorable on a box that also has "These Arms of Mine" on it |

hahah 3 dogwoods is hilarious. Another good one is "Goofin' Off" by Macy Skipper or the one Stax garage recording "Don't Let Her be Your Baby" by the Del-Rays

Some of you probably know this (I bet Eli R. does), but there's a new comp out called "Stax Instrumentals" which is 25 previously unreleased MG's nd Mar-Keys trax, and it's neat-o.

I like this guy's review on amazon (although I still wouldn't mind picking up the box someday) ...

Well; the Stax songs I was familiar with (such as "Green Onions"; "B-A-B-Y"; "You Don't Miss Your Water"; "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay"; "Soul Man"; "Born Under A Bad Sign" etc) are all great songs. "Well, why don't you like this set then" you're thinking. Answer: because the 30-or-so great songs on here are sandwiched between over 200 filler songs over 9 discs. If you think I'm being harsh on these songs, I'm not; I can appreciate songs like Wendy Rene's "Bar-B-Q" and the Memphis Nomad's "Don't Pass Your Judgement"; but aside from a few good numbers and a few pleasent-but-dull numbers, most of the non-hits on here are pretty bad. Basically, if you really like a Stax artist then go and buy a best-of for that artist; if your looking for a sampler of Stax's best songs, then go and buy the 4-CD Stax Story; don't bother with this one.<<< |
