I like Neil Diamond. I'm not quite what people would consider a fan, but I like a lot more than a couple of his songs, and I have a few records. I can live without ever hearing Sweet Caroline again, but I never tire of hearing songs like Cracklin' Rosie or Forever in Bluejeans. I wouldn't see him in concert now, but given the chance to go back 30 years and see him, I would definitely go.
He is the Jewish Elvis, in a way. He's not nearly the entertainer Elvis was, but unlike Neil, Elvis never wrote a song, never mind dozens of hit songs. So until a jewish pop music performer comes along that's better than Neil, he gets that monniker. |

The Ramones were as much pop as they were punk. Their influences were pop, plain and simple. Dee Dee and Joey loved pop deeply. It's hard for a lot of people to fathom, but Punk was a magazine first and foremost. That it became attached to powerful pop bands with edgy lyrics is fine, but too many people get way too defensive about the genre tag for some strange reason. Brits especially. Personally I reserve Punk as a label for much more aggressive stuff than The Ramones, Buzzcocks, Clash, Green Day, Sex Pistols, etc etc. I'll give it to Wire, Velvet Underground, Richard Hell, Sid Vicious (solo), Cramps, DNA, Contortions...

I grew up strongly disliking Neil Diamond, in large part because my mother played his records a lot at home.
In the past decade or so, however, I've found myself becoming much more appreciative of his songwriting and (to a lesser extent) his performing. I still probably wouldn't go see him, though, unless it were free. |
