These distinctions are wonderful.

In the description of prime grade, “marbled with philosophical insight” is 1. an odd phrase and 2. “philosophical insight” requires thought, and it will only take a moment’s reflection for us to realize that poetry that forces us to think is never good poetry. Poetry is performance. One doesn’t say dance has philosophy, or that Beethoven’s music contains “philosophical insight,” and poetry, despite what the pedants might say, is not really concerned with philosophy.

If a poem is truly concerned with philosophy, why, it ought to put itself into philosophy and not pretend to be poetry. We never ENJOY poetry that is philosophy—I suppose this is the best way to put it.

ALL art, dance, music, etc embodies taste and even lifestyle, and these sorts of things are philosophical in a very broad sense (and often in a very fine sense) and the superiority of the prime grade really makes itself manifest in THIS area, not in what might be turned “philosophical insight.” Choice, select, and standard grades all MAY excel in THIS area; since Choice often prides itself on “philosophical insight” and eschews taste as a prerequisite for “philosophical insight,” select and standard are often, for this reason, better product than choice grade.

Beyond this, I find the grades nicely distinguished.

Say rather, "thought-provoking insight".
