After my father in law requested that we use the initial "L" (after his mother Lillian) we chose "Lucy" as our daughters name. (yeah I'm a big Beatles fan)....at 4 years old she is JUST getting into the versions of the song that I have, insisting that each one be put in her personal folder on our iTunes. BAsically we named our daughter after the woman whose name inspired the song. Just heard this story on the news tonight and it really moved me.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_Vodden Lucy Vodden From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Lucy Vodden (1963 - September 22, 2009) was a British housewife, classmate of Julian Lennon and inspiration for The Beatles' 1967 song, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. [1] Vodden was born Lucy O'Donnell in Weybridge, Surrey, in 1963.[2] She was a classmate of Julian Lennon's, son of Beatles musician John Lennon, at Heath House School named Lucy O'Donnell, born in Weybridge in 1963.[3] Julian Lennon drew a picture of O'Donnell in 1966 and took it to his father, explaining to him that the picture he drew was, "That’s Lucy in the sky with diamonds."[1] The quote became the legend for the origin of the song.[1] O'Donnell married her husband and "childhood sweetheart", Ross Vodden, in 1996.[4] in 2007, Lucy Vodden admitted to being the Lucy referred to in the song in an interview with the BBC Radio.[1] She told the BBC that, "I remember Julian and I both doing pictures on a double-sided easel, throwing paint at each other, much to the horror of the classroom attendant… Julian had painted a picture and on that particular day his father turned up with the chauffeur to pick him up from school."[1] In 2009, Julian Lennon learned that Vodden, who lived in Surrey, England, suffered from the immune system disease lupus. Lennon sent her flowers with a personally written card.[5] After learning that Vodden was taking solace from gardening and looking at plants, Lennon sent her gift vouchers for a garden centre. Vodden, who saw Lennon in the intervening years one time at a concert of his, reacted by saying, "It was lovely of Julian."[6][4] Vodden developed an infection on the second day of her first vacation with her husband in eight years.[4] She was rushed to a hospital in King's Lynn, Norfolk,[4] where she died on 22 September, 2009 with her husband and father, writer Michael O’Donnell, at her bedside.[7] [8] Julian Lennon and his mother, Cynthia Lennon, released a statement saying they were "shocked and saddened" by Vodden's death.[4] This post has been edited by FrankD: Sep 28 2009, 10:31 PM |

I was reading another obit on her and how she had tried as a teenager to tell people that she was the Lucy in the song, but no one believed her. They said my parents told me it was about LSD, it's not about you. So after that she just kept quiet about it.
That seemed so sad that she couldn't enjoy her little bit of notoriety as a teenager. |
