I just found out that a close relative has died, I dont know the date or exact place. Is there any sort of national death records database out there? I did some google searching and the only things that come up are sites that dont seem 100% legit. Anyone have any advice as to where to start on this?

Try putting their name into legacy.com

If a participating newspaper carried the death notice it'll be in there

Maybe this is going to sound crazy - but can't you ask another family member?

If he's a close relative, somebody has to know something, right?

globe holds notices online for a year, herald i can't determine, i'd say chances are decent you'll find this

also, should you discover their last town of residence (not necessarily wherte they passed), their town hall should have detailed records

Call your local library and ask to speak to the reference department.

They field these requests all the time.

If they can't answer you on the spot, they'll likely e-mail you the info within 24 hours.

You may still be able to find this out by sending an e-mail to a newspaper company in Texas. I would imagine that most of the newspapers in this country are computerized now. They can probably do a simple search to find you the obit.

I'm going to try and call the Houston Chronicle tomorrow as well as the city hall. From what I can find, his last address was in Houston, so chances are they have records.
