yep. they're all idiots.

Our new HR lady, who replaced the superstar who got fired for her husband's fight at the company X-mas party, decided to find a way to "save the company money". She proposed re aligning the pay structure for our Senior Landscape Architects so that they are now considered management, and would thus be come salaried employees, and no longer be able to earn overtime.

Nice, take the money out of the pockets of the people who earn it. The Management committee ixnayed that immediately. They're also seeking to replace her already. laughing.gif

A company I worked for did that the other way around: They took a lot of us that were salaried and switched us to hourly...meaning that we earned overtime, and the people who made less and needed the money were subjected to having their hours reduced for it.

When I first started working I thought HR was a great bunch of people, there to take care of my benefits and stuff. Then I learned that HR is the enemy, unless you own the company. Anything you say to an HR person goes right to management. And they hate their dead-end jobs, so they're jealous and viscious.

With all my changes here at work in the past week, I still get my same salary, but I'm eligable for overtime after 8 hours a day.

That was one of the main reasons why I left corporate America to work for myself.

I kept asking HR to show me a roadmap to get promoted. Do I need a higher engineering degree? Do I need to patent more? Heck I already made 7 million for the company this year, do I need to make 8 million next year to be considered? What do I need to do?

My answer was unless you want to go into a management track (which I didn't, I wanted to move up a scientific track) they couldn't give me any idea how to earn a promotion.

After that they wouldn't make eye contact with me, and had my boss give me a pep-talk about being a fucking team-player. So, I said SEEEEYAAAAAH...

I didn't read the whole thread, but the use of an exclamation point in business correspondence is extraordinarily unprofessional.

Prisons we choose to live in.

There are companies that don't have such policies. And you can start your own company pretty easily too. Why complain so much about something you opt to be part of?

Wouldn't that be redundant?? Just about every HR person I've ever dealt with was a fucking idiot.

They're like the corporate version of a HS guidance counselor.

All managers at my company just had to do this self evaluation bullshit. So I do it and I am very honest on it. There are 7 categories. Most of which I put acceptable on. Communication I put that I exceed, because I feel I do. Prioritizing I believe I am just a little less than acceptable so that is what I put.

My boss sends the thing back to me with his self evaluation attatched. Says that the division president wants it this way. I open it up and his is "acceptable" across the board. Why not just fill the shit out for us and have us sign it? What a bunch of bullshit.

I would suppose that Outstanding really only applies to people who were smart enough to quit for better jobs elsewhere. They are out standing someplace else.

QUOTE(PRIMECHUQ @ May 3 2007, 02:07 PM) *

i just got this.

Hello All-
For the purpose of performance appraisals, I recently learned that we’ve been rating people too high on the scale of Outstanding, Exceeds, Meets, Needs Improvement and Does Not Meet. This will not change anyone’s merit raises in any way! We just have to accept that “Meets” actually means you’re doing a good/great job on the competency or in general. If an employee is performing very well in his/her position, this is a “Meets.”
An overall “Exceeds” should only be used for someone who really excels beyond doing a great job, someone who should be promoted. In other words, we should never use “Outstanding.”
Please adjust the final, signed performance appraisals to reflect this. My performance appraisal will be adjusted as well.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

it bothers me that HR tells people that they cannot possibly rate someone too high. morons. I cant stand HR people who dont know the fucking business or the people yet try to tell managers how to rate their people. and if you dont want it used DONT PUT IN ON THE FUCKING FORM.

sorry

/rant

I left the Commonwealth just before they implemented this appraisal system. My staff would have lynched me for rating them all "meets", and that was basically what I was being told to do.

they do this here at NEU as well. We are rated 1-5 but the policy is that you cannot be rated a 5.
She rates me at 4.5

you are at least a 7.

MOST HR people/policies are idiotic make work facisms.

Don't accept an HR person with anything less than a masters degree, because otherwise they have no skills at all.

In our firm there are two HR people. They probably have a brain between the two. And as someone sort of said above - HR is there for the company - not the employee. Or so it seems.

Yes, this is true, but they want ee's to believe they're there for them. I worked HR, this is why I scrub toilets now. Totally disillusioning experience. I went to HR to help people. Pffft.

One of my prior companies implimented this policy with a hard cap on the number of 5s in any category across the entire company, per division.

Managers were then sent emails not to rate ANYONE a 5. When someone trolled the review database, they found that all the 5s matched the hard cap perfectly, and they all worked at division headquarters for their division.

YAY Government rubbing off on government contractors!

Honestly though, I loathe the SMART system of performance reviews.
