Again, lots of good ones left out; Renoir, Polanski, Fassbinder, Truffaut, Preminger, and so on. And there are a few - particularly George Lucas - whose inclusion is questionable. But we're limited to 25 choices, so there you are. Still, have fun with it.

Because he directed two movies very, very well ("American Graffiti" and "Star Wars"), one of which was one of the most influential films of the latter half of the 20th century. Personally, I think the guy's shot his load, too, but he did have talent at one point. |

Russ Myer??? As we all know, I am an adamant supporter of huge titties and movies revolving around said titties, but that hardly makes him one of the greatest directors of all time.
Although I voted for Kubrick, had Joel Coen been on the list, I might have voted for him. |

who cares about DIRECTOR, we should really be talking about CINEMATOGRAPHER, in which case the award clearly goes to:
GORDON WILLIS p.s. i voted for kubrick but it was a real toss-up. |

Hey, huge titties are all you can ask of any movie as far as a lot of people are concerned. I threw in a couple of left field guys (John Waters was the other) just to keep it interesting. |

True, cinematographers are too often overlooked. That being the case, I honestly cannot name many offhand. The only one I know and like considerably is the Coen's cinematographer, Roger Deakins. What a brilliant artist he is. |

That's because they don't wear jodhpurs, a beret, and a monocle, nor do they carry around a riding crop in one hand and a megaphone in the other. Dress like that and you won't be overlooked for very long. |

Those are some great choices. I think when judging a body of work, diverse styles and content are most important and, on that basis, it's a toss-up between Lang and Kubrick (I voted for the latter).
Right now I'm on a Wes Anderson kick. I like all of JWS' list additions, and Samuel Fuller is tremendous oddball fun. With apologies to coughlin, Oliver Stone is the most overrated director of the century, so glad to see him omitted. Also hugely overrated: Brian De Palma. Derivative/manipulative hack. Wim Wenders is a definite oversight though. And Lasse Hallström. I haven't seen Hulk but Ang Lee is undeniably brilliant. And Michelangelo Antonioni. And Lars von Trier. And Jean Renoir. I'll stop. But so many, mostly European, best directors of all time didn't make that list. |

Yup. That's precisely why they're not on there. |

depalma may be a hack, but he's a fun one. and there's really no denying that "femme fatale" RULES. as does "blowout', "untouchables", "carrie", "scarface", and many others. sure, "dressed to kill", "the fury", "mission to mars", "body double", all major suckiness flicks, but when he's on he's ON.
lasse halstrom is on and off, as is ang lee. ang lee gets points for diversity but "hulk" totally sucks big time. that said, he's in the hall of fame if only for "ice storm". also for "sense and sensibility", "crouching tiger", etc. oliver stone may be a hack as well but that doesn't detract from the sheer audacity and awesomeness of "jfk" and "natural born killers". where the fuck is nicholas roeg on this list?!?!?! lars van trier = HUMONGOUSLY OVER-RATED |

Because I think he's pretty seriously overrated, too. I haven't seen a film of his that I've liked more or less all the way through since "Malcolm X" and "Bamboozled" was an absolute fucking mess. |

"bamboozled" = one of the onlyf ilms i've ever walked out of. sooooooo bad. just cheesy, poorly written and acted, stupid plot with an illogical premise (america is so racist that a black face minstrel show would be a big ratings hit, even though it's written and produced by a black tv exec trying to lose his job by creating a bomb a la "springtime for hitler"), shot on dig video, bad music, everything was terrible. oh and the forced love story was lame. bonus negative points for gratuitous use of MICHAEL RAPPAPORT.
but otherwise spike lee is usually a great director, although i haven't seen (and want to): "clockers", "summer of sam", "25th hour" (his "white person trilogy", if you will...) |
