Fuck it, Achtung Baby was a great record; and about the last thing anyone expected U2 to do at the time. that whole era was fun-- Zooropa was a quick-shot experiimental album that was pretty darn bizarre for a band ini their position. Pop was a lot weaker, but underrated and had some innovatiove moments.

Its the dull AOR direction odf the last two albums that lost me.

Then, that summer, they played a 17 minute version of Bad at Live Aid,
and it was all downhill from there.

I dunno man, "The Joshua Tree" is in my top 10 all-time records. I guess a lot of people see it as Bono jumping the shark...

I look at it almost the same way I do "Back in Black". It may not be indicative of the classic sound of that band, but it stands alone as probably thier best songwriting from beginning to end.

Achtung Baby seems like the last time song writing was the focus for them. For a while after that they were just trying to do different things, with some great moments, and some awful ones.

I choose to pretend the last couple records don't exist.

I thought Zooropa was fantastic!!. the first U2 disc I every bought. Here was the biggest band in the world taking a serious risks musically and with its image. They finally where able to unwind the uptight U2 of the 80's and actually male a little fun of themselves. Plus it had some great songs. They where re-born with the Actung-Zoorpa era as far as I was concerned.

IMO..They had to change up after "Rattle and Hum". That film was absobred in self importance and the band would later admit it as so.

As for not giving a shit about music. I dunno. Almost all of their records had some good and bad songs on them. The last record "...Atomic Bomb" had allot of good material on it .


If you pine for the 80's U2 then yes, you will continue to be dissapointed. but they hardly gave up IMO.

I agree with them taking chances in the 90's which was great, but they kinda stopped being a band around "POP" and became more like the Archies or something. To me, they almost sound like a U2 cover band now. The Fire that existed even up to "AB" and "Zooropa", is gone in a big way. I just believe when you lay the ground work to be a band that creates an album like "War", you should probably live up to that standard going forward. I don't like hearing a more watered down version of U2 with each new album.

I hear you and can udnerstand why you feel that way. War is quite a record to live up to.
