Jason Hawkins who's helped bands like Bang Camaro and The Everyday Visuals
committed suicide this morning at his parent's home in Ashland. He was a very close friend of mine and enjoyed working with me with the Boston Music Scene.
Jason fell in love with the diversity that Boston had to offer when he was still in high school. He use to message me about a lot bands such as Helicopter Helicopter, The Halogens, The Collisions... He had a lot of energy and had a lot ideas. Every time I was with him he had a great desire to take on the world. Never in my life I would ever imagine him being so down. He had so much enthusiasm he could have bottled it and sold it to us.

Having this happen to me before I just wish if one would ever feel so down a simple phone call could put the breaks on to such a horrible downward spiral. Life does get very complicated and at times unbearable but the most important thing not to lose site of the people around you. The ones who really care could be there for you for years. In time, what ever that has taken your life and beat it up so bad, it too will move on. I've had some pretty depressing thoughts in my life but what keeps me going through these times are the magical moments that life has to offer. Some of them can be very small, but just big enough to lift your spirits high enough so you can breathe normal for just a little while. Life is short but it is long enough to fuck up several times and come back.

I often wonder what life would be like if I could still call my sister. I buy her a drink every year on the same day. And now I have to wonder how successful Jason could have been if he stayed with us. I'm going to miss him deeply.

These are 2 videos that he made last year.

This kid seemed to be the textbook definition of youthful exuberance. Every pic you see on his myspace site is a huge smile, usually surrounded by friends. I got to exchange a few emails with him a couple years back, just seemed like a bright, forward-looking guy.

I wish he'd called me or written me... This is a darker world without that smile.

God damn it. I've been so close to this myself so many times. Life is really just awful sometimes, and it can truly look like it'll never get better, or that the fight uphill to a place where you'll be happy isn't even worth it anymore. Was talking to another friend about this last night, and he pointed out that at least Jay doesn't feel like that anymore, because that's about as dark and painful as it gets. And it's totally true.

I just really wish he'd known that he could have called me and gone out for a beer and talked about all of this shit and been taken dead seriously. And I find myself wishing I'd made that known to him, but how would I know to do it? Urgh. Rest in peace, J. I'm so sorry.

I just re-read this and realized he died at his parents home. I just felt a horrible tinge of grief upon seeing that. As a parent, this has got to be beyond devastating for them. It would be a great comfort to them and friends if said friends made an effort to contact them before and/or after the usual wake or funeral. Just a thought.

So sorry to hear this. Best wishes and deepest sympathy to friends and family. As someone who's gone thru this, you're gonna beat yourself up about this a lot. Just try not to second guess yourself....and try to be there for his mom and dad, and each other.

Bill, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. And to all others who knew this boy with the great smile, my condolences. Depression is one of the hardest things in life to deal with, and I think it's safe to say that from the smallest tinge to the most hardcore cutting feeling, all of us have been exposed to this kind of torment at some point. I went through a bad bought of it in my late teen-early college years and I have a friend now who is going through some major turmoil, so I can completely relate. It's difficult and draining to care about someone so much and be unable to do anything about the demons inside their own head. Hopefully, Jason is at peace now. With this outpouring of love from friends, may others who are going through a similar struggle realize that there is light at the end of the tunnel. We all crap on each other on here, but when it comes down to the serious shit, there are a lot of great people in our city who care a great deal about their fellow rockers.

That was the best advice given to me the first time I experienced this....

Man, I live next town over and I have the same T-Shirt.....not knowing exactly what was going on in this thread that picture...he has a million dollar smile...

"going home" and doing (whatever) is like a classic act....going back to the womb....

stupidest shit for these fuckers to do.....and there's always more to the story....sometimes you hear it, sometimes you don't.....

hindsight is always 20/20......but the only thing we can be sure of is that good news always sleeps until noon.

Oh Bill, how awful. My condolences to you and to Jason’s friends and family.

And what a very profound and moving note that you wrote at a time when you are obviously hurting very much. I hope that it provides a source of comfort and encouragement that others will remember if they are ever in one of those dark places where they feel they cannot go on.

I wish you peace and strength.

Very sorry to hear this. I don't think I knew him but he's certainly someone I would have crossed paths with, as I've been a fan of all the bands you listed there. Similar thing happened to a friend of mine about two years ago - a guy who never showed any signs of this kind of behavior and seemed to have plenty going for him.
