i gotta confess, every time i've done this, i see Ack's track lists & think, oh great, another 26 tracks of this shit, and every time, they're fucking amazing. i have no idea how he keeps up on this many unknown (to me) acts of such twisted magnitude, or something... mind-boggling.

ACK!

This is great shit!

I didn't realize Ultravox was so prophetic. Strangely thety made me think of that Laurie Anderson song "O Superman."

I'm halfway through. More commentary to follow.

or, in the spirit of jon foxx, if you like that song, it comes off of ha!ha!ha!, which is an unbelievable record from start to finish.

Without a doubt this is high quality. It is not a genre I like all that much as a whole, and I have heard of maybe 4 bands on the mix. Somehow despite this (people told me this was going to happen, but I didn't believe them) you put on a bunch of really great songs and produced something I will listen to again and again. You get a lot of compliments for your taste in music around here and I have to agree.

I've been stuck of late on these reviews -- not getting to many mixes, working a lot, and this mix I didn't feel ready to comment on as there are a lot of tracks and it takes several listens to start to differentiate the songs with some clarity. I'm still not an expert on it but I can name my favorites just so Joe gets some feedback.

There were several songs that were just out-of-this-world great. Some of my absolute favorites from all 6 of these mix trades.
The song by the Blank-Its -- this one is ultra-amazing. I feel like it's a song I was sub-consciously hoping would get written and now it has been. The vocals.
Others that were honestly loved by me in a big way: King Khan and the BBQ Show- !; Boston Boppers -- another mind-blower of the first order; Nathaniel Mayer; Dirty Looks - awesome power pop; Rumblers. Those were my top choices.
But many more I liked.
One tier down: Ivy Green; Flakes, Bunker Hill; Electric Shadows; Firestarter; Exploding Hearts; Gentlemen; Homosexuals; Clone Defects; Reigning Sound; Larry and the Blue Notes; Tenage Head; Country teasers- funny!; and the closest I've ever heard ack-er get to putting on a ballad, I liked the Symmetry of Sound song.
Some others I liked but I wanted to discriminate as much as I could what I liked best.

ack x 4 , please feel free to tell me more about any of these bands, especially those who did the songs that are tops for me above. One other thing I'd be interested in hearing is the years of these songs if you have the time.
Thanks a lot again for bringing a sample of a whole "scene" that I think is pretty much completely foreign to all of us in this, to us.

i'll try to be somewhat thorough with the "1st tier":

the blank its - newish band from the northwest. that song is off the "stop hyphenation now" 45, released in 2004. the only other material they have out is a split 7" with the feelers (the song "master intellectual" is on there) and a 8- song (i think) demo that's been floating around. all of it is quite good. very droney and bratty like the song on this mix. i'll be seeing them in chicago in may for the blackout, and will likely get drunk and bug the shit out of them for a full-length.

king khan and bbq show - both guys used to play in the spaceshits together years ago. bbq also played in the sexareenos. now bbq does the solo thing (also great!) and king khan has the shrines, which are a more soul/funk thing. this song came off the debut record that goner records put out this year (at least i believe it's finally gotten an official pressing). we played with them in january and they're fucking awesome live.

boston boppers - i know nothing about this. a friend of mine put this on a glam comp for me. he scored by finding this 45. apparently the b-side is pretty great, too. i'm guessing mid-70s, but i'm not totally sure of the exact date.

dirty looks - mrwhirly made me a copy of this lp after a friend and i were at a stalemate at in your ear. i let him take it. bad move, as i haven't seen it since. so yeah, mrwhirly is awesome. this was on the self-titled lp, ca. 1980. it's all pretty good, with the excepting of "disappearing," which drives me nuts for some reason.

Rumblers - i have this song on a series of comps called "desperate rock n roll." all 50's/60's rock n roll/rnb stuff. i know nothing about them otherwise. the drags (from new mexico) do a cover of this song and it's good, too.

nathaniel mayer - this song's off the "village of love" lp, which i guess came out sometime in the 50s. he's great, still kicks around, and his newer stuff is actually rather good.

ivy green - dutch (?) punk band. late 70s early 80s, i think. i only have copies of the first two lps, as they're a bitch to find. all really good songs, a lot of which are only one chord. spitzz do a great cover of this one. they do "television" too.

flakes - russel quan from the mummies/count backwurds/dukes of hanmburg/bobbyteens' newer band. 4 singles out. all pretty similar in quality. this one came out in 2003.

electric shadows - newer nyc band. that song's off a demo they put out last year. 5 songs, pretty much no stinkers. if all goes well, they'll be on a show up here this summer.

exploding hearts - portland, or band that unfortunately lost 3 members in a van wreck 2 years ago. this was off a demo they'd put out prior to releasing their full length. i would guess 2002 for this one.

gentlemen, larry and the blue notes - 60s. off the forth worth teen scene comp (vol 3). that gentlemen song always gives me a hard on. always.

teenage head - i think that record came out in 81. i could be wrong. off their s/t debut. unfuckingbelievable record from beginning to end. seriously, not a dud in the bunch on that one.

homosexuals - uk art punk band. there's a 3-disc retrospective available for real cheap (20 bucks) that can sum them up way better than i can. that's one of the more poppy, straight-away songs they do.

country teasers - fucked up geniuses. off 1996's satan is real again, one of their best. they're from scotland. br wallers also does solo stuff as The Rebel. a love/hate band with many.

clone defects - now defunct detroit band. this record came out in 2003. i wanted to put "low fashion lovers" on here because it's a way better song, but the intro before the music actually starts would've taken up a good chunk of the mix. half the band is in Human Eye, whose record came out this month. it's more fucked than any of the clone defects stuff, which is kind of a feat.

reigning sound - greg cartwright from the oblivians current band. off the 2004 "too much guitar" lp. from memphis (though now i think they live in NC). this new record's probably the most frantic of the lot.

symmetry of sound - a favorite. killer song off the "no no no" comp from arf arf records. mid-60s, i believe. i know nother other than this one track.

as for "the closest thing to a ballad," i still have to send you the disc 2. a lot of mopier, slower type stuff that i couldn't figure out how to fit here.

this went on way too long.

thank you sir! and no I don't think it went on too long. I'm one of those guys who reads those book thingys so this was shorter than those. Interesting stuff -- surprised, but not really when I think about it, how old some of that stuff is, even though it sounds "old" I thought it was current retro-ism. Also the fact that some of those bands are European surprised me. Thanks again.

Joe - I have to ask, have you been able to decipher the lyrics to that Blank-Its song? I don't know if I want to try to...
