ALCHEMIST July, 11 2008 at The Wonderful Spells 435 South Huntington Avenue, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts 02130 Cost : Always Free The imaginative and whimsical chemistry of Wonderful Spells has evolved through many years of friendship, brotherhood, and a fiendish obsession with rock and roll. These four boys were born to play music together; indeed, Jamie Moore (vocals/bass) and Bo Moore (vocals/guitar) have been writing songs since they were 3 and 4. Then in kindergarten, Jamie met Josh Carrasco (drums), or as he called him, "Joshua Giraffe." By high school Josh was known as J-Raff, and was on his way to becoming the craziest drummer since Animal. Here they met Andrew Zizik (vocals/guitar/keys), a twitchy guitarist and technical whizz. Jamie re-named him Melvin. Flash forward to now: Wonderful Spells have been making waves in Boston with their unique brand of psychedlic pop/rock for years. After getting a hold on their older tunes, the Spells dove into some fresh new compositions, like "Starlette" and "Black Cat." They had a lot of smashing parties at the practice space, where they are known to take the stage dressed as mummies, bumble bees, or glam rockers. So what is the music of Wonderful Spells? It is shape-shifting and frenzied, darkly psychedelic but brightly straightforward, with a penchant for glorious harmonies and bizarrely melodic arrangements. It is the sound of 4 best friends who spend so much time in each other’s brains that they can’t help but exist in their own dimension. "The Prophecy of Smarmulous Rex" EP was self-released by the band in May 2007. |
